You are safe as long as you have all the security measures enabled on your router. What you are seeing is people that are in close anough range that has their own wireless network also. Mine will pick up as far as 5 houses away from where I live at. There are several here. Hope this answers your question?

The basic requirements are:
The copier must have a valid email address to log in to the server and send messages.
Your network settings must reflect the server and protocol being used.
Usualy mimicing the settings from a computer works as it is basiclly the same thing.
The device should give you different errors if it cannot locate the server as compared to unable to log in.

If you think you may have an incorrect ip address, that probably means you changed it by setting a static address. Most systems (with the exception of business systems using domains), use auto ip addressing. Logging on to most wifi hotspots and most home wireless routers requires auto ip addressing. To set yours to auto (this is with XP, I think Vista and Windows 7 is similiar, you just find the controls in slightly different places) go to Control Panel, then to network connections, then right click on the 1394 connection and select properties. In the new pop-up box, if it is not already selected, select tcp/ip and then click properties. (You can also double click the tcp/ip item). In the new pop-up box, make sure both "obtain ip address automatically" and "obtain dns server automatically" are both selected by using the radio buttons. Click Ok on both pop-up boxes to close. While you're in the area, the control panel should still be open. Double click "internet options." Then click on the connections tab, and towards the bottom, click on the lan button. On the new pop-up box, uncheck automatically detect settings. This usually makes you wired connection faster.
