I had the same problem with our 5-CD Sony carousel player CDP-C535
(manufactured Nov 1993). I removed the top metal cover, and loaded five
audio CDs into the carousel. After I closed the table, I pressed the
carousel tight so that it stayed close, and hit the play button. The CD
player tried to push the carousel out with quite a force. I needed to
warp me fingers around the front panel to keep the carousel closed.
After a few cycles of forcing the carousel to remain close, and caused
two separate strong "clucks" from the gear area, the CD carousel became
operational again. The diagnosis of gear problem seems right.
Broken gears. The current replacement 5 disc is a CD/DVD player and sells for $129.00 at Sony or any other Sony retailer. The cost to have a service center even estimate the repair would be more than 50% of the replacement cost. Hope this helps
My unit closed immediately upon opening since like 1 day after the warranty ran out. It bothered me. I finally tore it apart and this fixed it.
Take the cover off. As you are facing the front of the player, the blue sensor switch that controls the tray will be on your left in the middle of the carousel. Push button to open tray and locate it as the tray opens. Grab the tray and also the carousel and hold them so you can see the little blue switch. Use a tiny screwdriver or toothpick or other slender device to "flick" the switch fully forward and backward several times. Let go of the tray and try the button. If it still closes immediately, repeat the flicking. Try it again.
First, make sure the DVD Recorder is completely disconnected from the Main Supply.
Then, if you look on the base of the unit, (just underneath the front of the Disc Insert/Eject Tray), there is a small slot, (approx 25 x 8mm), in which you can see a small, white, plastic lever probably situated near the right-hand side of the slot.
Then move this lever gently to the left, and then turn it on and the tray opens by pushing the button.
