Question about GoVideo VR3845 DVD Recorder/VCR

DVD won't recognize the disk message below

I just recently started to experience a problem with my unit. When I try to insert a DVD or a blank DVD I get a message : "UNKNOWN DISC PLEASE CHECK DISC AGAIN".
I have tried several DVDs several times with no success. I've had this unit for some time and had no previous problems with it. This just started recently.
What can I do?

Thanks

    I have the same problem and it just started. I have had the machine for a few months and have played both VCR and DVD recordings with no problem. I tried to copy a VCR recording to a DVD disc and that is when I got the error message. I now cannot play a DVD or insert a blank DVD but can play an audio CD. I can still play VCR recordings. It looks like several persons have the same problem but no one seems to have a solution.

    I was initilaizing a disc, then stuck a video tape inside and pressed the stop button and play and others, then my initializing froze and manually shut power off by holding in power button then after that, It won't recognize dvd-r, rw or an actual dvd movie, it just spits it back out.

Try running a DVD cleaner through it and see what happens. You can get one at Walmart for under $10. If that doesn't do the trick then take it to someone that can open it up to clean it.

Try a different manufacturer/brand of DVD-recordable disks.
If you still have the problem, then your drive is malfunctioning,
and you need to get a qualified technician to disassemble your computer, and replace it.

Does not recognize disk

Either:
* the disk you're inserting is not "empty" -- try it on a different computer;
* you should try a different manufacturer of "blank" disks;
* you need to upgrade the "firmware" inside your CD-writer, to recognize more brands of "blank" media;
* the CD-reader is malfunctioning -- when you "cancel" the burn-attempt, and insert a commercially-produced program CD or commercially-produced audio CD, can those disks be properly read?
* you have two CD/DVD devices in your computer, and you're inserting the "blank" disk into the "wrong" device.

Was going to leave this question? Normally computer will react that way when a blank disk that is not formatted is put into the drive. The blank disk then requires formatting and will function. Not sure if this answers your quesiton. Sorry.

DVD CD-R drive does not recognize a blank CD on toshiba sattelite

Try this before you enter disk.
  1. setup software or files to transfer when prompted to enter CDR, then place in drive.
  2. Or open my computer, select cd drive right click select, format disk. When prompt comes up for disk insert CDR.
Some systems have trouble with other manufactured formatted disk.

Doesn't recognize disks anymore

This is a common problem with the Lite-on LVW range of DVD recorders due to changes in the construction of more recent DVD R media. It can be solved with a relatively simple firmware upgrade.

Goto : http://r00.liteonit.com.tw/DC/english/download/index.asp

You'll need to have a blank CD and a CD/DVD writer in the PC you use to download the file.

Follow the instructions on the website to upgrade your firmware, this should then allow you to write to DVD's once again.

Can't record DVDs

OK. Finally "solved" this problem. You must use the brand name "Maxell" DVD disks, 2x or 4x (maybe 8x). Do not use variable speed disks (e.g. 1x--4x) or 16x. Walmart carries these!

The DVR -RW 2x finally got mine to record. I didn't think this would work, but it did. I am still experimenting with it. Had to download (free) VLC player to get it to play on my computer. Works fine in other DVD players.

Credits to the Sears' repairman, the guy at F., and my patience!
