Dear sir: i have a laptop computer that is a compaq presario 1200xl118 computer . i have a slight problem . i downloaded off disc winxp but had some problems with a missing driver hraidsk1. as a result i then put winme on it an it took that with ease. but i have a problem with not being able to get rid of the winxp partition. i have run win98 disc to get rid of the partition for winxp an it worked the first time the 2nd time it did not an the third time etc. so how do i erase the partions that were setup for winxp or how do i erase the entire harddrive so i can start fresh without buying a new small harddrive for the computer. an ?#2. can i put a 10gb harddrive in my laptop if i upgrade it. any help would be appericated.

You will have to remove the power cord, remove the batteryand remove the CMOS Battery that is located on the motherboard. On mostcomputers you will have to take the laptop apart to get to the cmosbattery. On some systems it looks like a silver nickel that you will needa small flat head screw driver to pop it out. On other systems it will beinside a vinyl covering and has a cable that plugs into the motherboard. Once you remove the CMOS Battery, let it sit for an hour or two then put itback in and put the laptop back together. Boot the machine and you'llprobably have to go into the Bios or System Setup because the system will haveforgotten the date, time and password. If the password is not reset then you might have to go and remove a Pin from the password jumper on the motherboard. I would consult the user manual and see how to do it.
Go to BIOS and check whether the harddrive is detecte in BIOS.If it is not detected then the harddrive is either missing or there is a problem with the hard drive connection.Reconnecting the same may resolve the issue
IT CAN BE FIXED.. HANDS ON IS THE BEST WAY . LETS GIVE THIS A SHOT. COMPAQ NOT GOING TO HELP YOU THEY WANT YOU TO BUY ANEW ONE IF IT WORK WHEN IT HAD VISTA , IT WILL WORK NOW, I AM SURE OF THAT. YOU MIGHT HAVE TO HAVE IT COMPLETELY TAKEN APART AND RESET IT , BUT THATS ANOTER STORY , FOR now remove the battery and remove the ram/ memory card, then remove the hard drive , a sigle screw should remove the hardrive memory as well then i want you to hold down the power button for about 3 minutes , then insert harddrive only press power, if you hear a beep good sign if th power button remains after the harddrive is installed, hold power button till computer turns off then install ram memory USE YOUR POWER CORD THREW OUT THIS PROCESS [email protected] your computer can be fixed i know its easy said then done ITS MINOR but a tech will tell you the total opposite
It means the install cannot see or detect the hard disk and is caused by :-
Incorrect BIOS setting for the hard drive.
A faulty hard drive.
The hard drive is not seated correctly on the hard drive connector.
Test the hard drive in another laptop or attach the hard drive to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port, if it see the drive as an external drive and you can copy and delete files to this drive then it is OK and the fault is with the laptop.
