Central air does not kick in.

My central air stopped working. It makes a humming noise like it will go on then it doesnt keep going. Could I need a new thermostate? It was working great before that. It just happend all of the sudden. Also could weak batteries cause the thermostate not to work?

Great question regarding weak batteries possibly causing the thermostat to not work. I'm sorry to hear that your air conditioning unit isn't working properly. I've noticed something similar happening at my house. It might be time for me to call a professional who can specialize in this sort of thing. The heat is making it pretty difficult to sleep at night. https://vicsheatingandcooling.com/

It sounds like you have a bad capacitor to the compressor. The humming noise is the compressor not starting up but is trying. It is either the capacitor or the compressor form your description. If you had a lightning storm or power surge about the time this happened it is most likely a bad capacitor. You can have the capacitor tested to see. Disconnect power before working on unit!

Whether its a central air unit or a wall unit, make sure the condensor is clean and air can flow thru it
make sure the condensor fan is running, the condensor fan keeps the compressor from over heating
if the condensor fan stops running the compressor will over heat and trip the circuit breaker. good luck!

Its possible that the contactor that closes to start the outdoor unit is not pulling in and passing power. You are hearing the coil humming since it is getting control power. Also first check that breaker for outdoor unit is not tripped

Is the indoor fan working? The problem with the outdoor fan sounds like it could be your capacitor. Turn off the power to the outdoor unit and make sure the fan turns freely using a screwdriver or something that will reach the blades. If it turns freely then it is probably the capacitor. Let me know what you find.
