I've tried adjusting the travel up and down screws to no avail. The opener is about 18 years old. Any suggestions?
Although nothing is in the way of the break-beam sensors, are they still properly aligned? They usually have a light on them to indicate if alignment is still correct.
It could be a limiter switch, Although you have adjusted your travel screws maybe the sensor for the downward travel screw is failing?

I figured out that when I replaced the gears, I damaged the RPM sensor. It was easy to swap out the old for the new and now it works fine.

I'm no expert, but on a previous door opener I had (don't know the brand), the side adjusting screw basically adjusted a limit switch, which was located inside the plastic housing (where the motor is). I was able to remove the housing, figure out which limit switch was actually being contacted "too soon" on the way down and adjusted it while watching it.
Just a suggestion, you might take a look.
just keep your hands out of the way of the chain and sprocket if you do take the housing off. .

I had a simular issue, except mine was that the previous owner decided to mess with all the settings and mounts and screwed everything up.
The problem isn't your force sensors its your downwards stopping sensor on the opposite side of the opener. For me I had to take the entire panel off and replace the sensor back in its holder, but try adjusting that sensor setting (clockwise goes down, counterclockwise goes up).
If that doesn't work then i dunno:)
Also set both force settings in between 0-1, for some reason with mine if i set it higher it would set them off....

If you cannot get the light on the sensor to come on by tweaking it,making sure it is pointed at the other sensor and your wiring is not broken or shorted then your sensors need to be replaced.
