The hard drives are sealed to keep dust and dirt out, if any gets in it will defeat the whole process of operation causing premature failure.

I Have a Maxtor blackArmor personal storage drive. I have forgotten the pass word to it. It wont let me change the password without knowing the original password. It has our family pictures on it tha

Well, according to Maxtor, there's nothing you can do to recover the password. I suppose that's the point of having a secure drive like that. Here is an excerpt from their FAQ:

"What do I do if I lose or forget my BlackArmor drive's Password?
There is no way to recover a lost/forgotten password. In the event that this happens, you must perform a KeyEraseTM using the Maxtor Manager software. Once erased, you will have to reconfigure, repartition and reformat before redeployment/use."

Seagate nas 220 will not play mp3 files

The file format is dictated by the OS and accessable by software, meaning it needs to associated with a player like Winamp. Try installing a new meida player.

Right clicking the files will also give you the option to assign a program. "Open With." You also need admin rights. This may aslo be the problem, if you are not the owner / administrator.

Seaget BlackArmor NAS 110 not booting

Sounds like a software problem with your BlackArmor or perhaps a failing drive. You might contact a low cost data recovery service such as http://FreeDataRecovery.us

They perform online data recovery over the internet and also offer do-it-yourself data recovery advice.

Do I need to power down?

No. Hard rives are for the most part the only moving part on a computer. Failures occur randomly just as flat tires on cars occur randomly. If the drive is going to fail it is normally due to wear or factory defect.

FTP not working on BlackArmor using IE or Windows 7 Explorer Share created, even public access enabled. Details: 200 Switching to ASCII mode 550 Permission denied

Check on BlackArmor Manager that the FTP mode is enabled for the folder you want access to.
You can check it by typing "http://192.168.1.66" in the adress bar on your explorer, enter your login and password ("admin" and "admin" by default), then click
storage -> shares
if "FTP" is disabled, click on the pen (modify) and enable it. don't forget to click "submit" ;-)

I have HP HDX-18 laptop, Windows 7 Ultimate installed I installed Segate BlackArmor WS 110 on the PC The IPv4 Address :192.168.0.199 IPv4 DNS Server :192.168.0.1 I used: Programs...

I'm assuming the IP address of 192.168.0.199 is actually that of the computer you are using and not that of the Seagate. You need to determine the address of the Seagate, download this: PortScan
Unzip and run it. Start address is 192.168.0.1, end address is 192.168.0.255 (it should automatically detect this). The scan will display a list of all the devices connected to your network and attempt to display what it is. Locate the Seagate and enter its IP in the text box.

Can the hard drive be replaced by end user?

Most probably, however claim warranty support if you can as opening up the unit will void all warranty.
