What group set do you have?
Have you looked on the Shimano website? They have a lot of useful information on there, including basic gear setuo details which will generally apply to all groupsets.

SOURCE: owners manual for a shimano bicycle

Not sure you will find an owners manual but I highly recommend the book Zinn and the art of bicycle repair. Zinn is the author. He covers every fix imaginable for new and older/vintage bikes. He probably has several versions of the book out.

SOURCE: SHIMANO FISHING REEL

The drag is set by turning the knob which secures the spool to the reel.

To cast, hold the line against the rod with index finger on right hand. Then flip the bail open which frees the line to come off the spool. The bail, when it gets to a certain point will lock open. When casting, release your finger on the line when the rod gets to 11 o'clock.

Flip the bail back by turning the reel handle -- the bail will pop back over the reel -- then you're ready to reel it in.

The bail is the wire-like device on the top of the reel.

There is probably a button/switch for turning anti-reverse on & off -- when on, this keeps the reel from turning backwards when force is applied to the line.

I think those are the highlights.

SOURCE: shimano tiagra 9 speed shifters how to change gear

Go to http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

Search in drop down list to go to all tiagra items and identify your particular components. Shimano are good at numbering their parts and you should find the number you seek on the bicycle component. You will usually be able to download an exploded parts diagram and service instructions. The service instructions are prefixed by the letters SI.

SOURCE: Where can I get manual for new Shimano EF-50- EZ

The manual will not help you understand shifting. Your lowest gear is (Left hand =Front gears and brakes, Right hand=rear gears and brakes). Your easiest gears are the ones closest to the frame of the bike, so, 1st gear is small sprocket on the front and large one on the rear, and remember, front is your ranges , then rear is to fine tune. No one can tell you what gear you should be in, your legs will. Do not pedal backwards, always forward, and do not kitty corner your chain, ie, small gear to small gear and large to large, because it will stretch your chain (yes, chains stretch and then you have to replace. Use both brakes at the same time, just using the front will throw you, and the rear will only slow you down not stop you. It is just like a car, front brakes do most of the work. Good luck

How to replace front cable shimano comfort 050 ?

Put the bike in the lowest numbered gear, put chain on smallest spocket/chainring. Disconnect cable from derailuer, pull cable, then replace with a new one by following steps in reverse. For detailed pictures, go to Utube or sheltonbrown .com.

Is there a Bianchi bike owners manual so I know how to adjust the gear lever?

Look on the brake lever for a manufacturer and model number (probably Shimano). Even if you can't establish a model number, go to the website and find the mountain bike shifter that is closest to yours, There will probably be a technical manual for it and it will describe how to install and adjust it. You'll also want to look for and understand the derailleur it controls.

What kind of components do I need?

Most bikes have Shimano shifters & deraillers; SRAM is the other main vendor. Shimano makes a wide range; the following table attempts to describe these and presents my best guess of where the SRAM line fits in: Model Quality SRAM Equivalent?
SIS, Tourney (or just says Shimano) Mainly designed for riding around the neighborhood
Altus Sufficient for paved or very easy trails; avoid hills 3.0
Acera Slightly better, but won't shift well under stress; capable for easy casual riding 4.0
Alivio Minimal capable for recreational riding; will handle some hard riding 5.0
STX / Deore Entry-level components for hard riding; tough & reliable 7.0
LX The minimum standard for hard riding. Reliable & responsive 9.0
XT More responsive than LX, but still reasonable tough 9.0SL
XTR Light, responsive racing components; tend to be quite expensive; often sacrifices toughness for responsiveness X.0

Look for a component set that fits your expected riding style.

Note:The numbered SRAM components aren't compatible with Shimano components. SRAM does make grip-shifters that are Shimano-compatible.

There are many other manufacturers that specialize in various components (Avid, Cane Creek, Race Face, Hope) and make great ones. Ask the LBS personnel for a comparison if you see a brand you don't know. Also, you can use the same test as forks above: if its not sold separately, its probably more questionable. If you're getting a full-suspension bike, make sure you get a good rear shock as well (it'll probably be something other than SRAM or Shimano).

My Shimano Deore DX mountain bike up / down shifter is malfunctioning. Any help will be appreciated.

Maybe start here and if you can't figure it out, take it to a Bike Shop. Ther's only so much useful mechanical advice one can remotely lend with no details.

Hi, Just bought a new bike with shimano tiagra gearing. However the gear shifters doesn't seem to work. There is no movement in the cables when I try to shift gears. Do you have any idea for a quick fix or...

You don't mention which shifter(s) malfunction or if you're even pedaling the bike while shifting (I make NO assumptions).

If you operate the inner shift lever (NOT the brake lever) on each side through several clicks that should RELAX any tension in the shifter cables. Then if you pick the bike up and pedal it forward a couple of turns the front shifter should drop the chain the the lowest chainring and the rear derailleur should shift out the the smallest cog.

With the bike suspended (say, hanging from a low tree branch by the tip of the seat) you should be able to turn the cranks and manually pull sideways on either exposed shifter cable where it runs down along the downtube then release it.

This should cycle each respective derailleur through its entire range. If the cables don't travel sufficiently in this manner, the shifters will never make them do it either.

Perhaps you could CALL the Bike Shop and they would talk you through a quick operational check.

Shimano Tourney rear derailleur is stuck on smallest gear and will not shift. How do I adjust the tension correctly?

There are several things that could be wrong. You could have thrown your chain (you couldn't ride at all if so). The bike could have been crashed and the derailleur bent. The cable might have slipped where it bolts to the derailleur. Or the cable or shifter could need maintenance, too. It is most likely one of the above. If it is only the adjustment, there are two stop screws on the derailleur that can be adjusted.

My best advice for you is to either find a bicycle repair manual at a local bookstore or your library that can show you some of the detail. Or just let your local bike shop do the repair.
