I would like to date a stihl chainsaw by serial number if that is possible thanks

Spray a little starter fluid down the carburator . It is starts then is is a fuel problem. Most likely a gummed up carburator. Remove and clean .

Chances are good that the compression is not to blame. I would look at:
1. Bad Fuel
2. Fuel Line/filter
3. Carb dirty/mis adjusted
3. Spark Plug
4. Ignition

The date of Manufacture is not posted on a Stihl chainsaw. Only a dealer can tell you that information, and Stihl doesn't like to let consumers know this information, as from a selling point of view, model year can't be used to negotiate a lower price (like last year's car model...still new, but you get a lower price because it's not the current year.) You may find a dealer that will look up the serial number and tell you, but not always is it possible.
