Question about Microsoft Xbox 360 Console

1 Answer

Xbox360 fan turns off after about 3 seconds w/ rrod

Was fixing what I thought to be was just another rrod, u know scrub off the thermal paste that SHOULD be crusty and **** if it overheated, but instead it was fine. I replaced it anyways and put it all back together and set the fan on top of the dvd drive, turned it on and they just shut right off after spinning around a few times, got the rrod, and got ******* pissed. What the hell happend?

My xbox always suddenlly shut down while im playing it will not reach 20 minutes its shuts down again.

If before it shutdowns it has 2 red light its a Overheating issue, if still under warrenty send it back to microsoft or... you can, open it up by following this guide: . http://www.rrodfix.com/how-to-take-apart-the-microsoft-xbox-360-game-console.html Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Get a can of air, make sure its all aired out, and you hold the can horizontal don't tilt it, and short bursts. Once thats done. If you want to make sure it never overheats you can do whats called a 12v mod on the 360 it forces the fans to run at full speed. Now if you have a slim you just snip the grey wire. If its a older model you get the fans, and wire it up to a external 12v 1amp ac to dc adapter or solder it to this point :http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/mods/360-12V-fan-Mod.htm this link also shows what wires are postive and negative. And I would also suggest changing the thermal paste out for some better stuff like artic silver five. Now if you're getting Red Ring of Death which is 3 red lights you need to follow this guide :This is called Red Ring of Death or RROD by the community, it means that the CPU or GPU or both have a bad solder joint, that is caused from rapid heating and cooling from poor cooling design of the xbox 360. To fix it is pretty simple. Follow these instructions to take apart your 360: http://www.rrodfix.com/how-to-take-apart-the-microsoft-xbox-360-game-console.html Stop once you've removed the dvd drive. Now Remove the fans from the back, and set them on the heatsink on the right the flat one, and make sure they are pointing where the air is going up. Put a peice of of carboard or plastic something non conductive in between the heatsinks to prevent airflow from the fans. Turn on the 360, and leave it til it goes from 3 rings to 2 rings, wait 3 minutes, then switch the fan over to the other side. Wait about as long as you did for the other one then turn off the 360. Wait 1 hour for the 360 to cool off. DO NOT move the 360 while it is cooling down durning this period or you will permantly ruin it, the solder is being reflowed. After an hour, put the fans back, and turn the 360 on, it should work. Once its working, I recommend doing a 12 volt mod on the fans to prevent RROD from happening again, and changing out the thermal paste with artic silver 5.

System error flashing red lights

You need to have the motherboard fixed, do to this you need to take the xbox360 apart then reflow the board.

there is a great 6part video guide on YouTube to view for free. 6 videos from the same fellow, each video is a few mins long, and goes over everything for you.

http://www.youtube.com/user/ohiocitysales#p/u and its free unlike some eBook site.

I actually used the same method to fix over 450 Xbox360 units with no problems at all, barring a few (but i have done nearly 500 so you expect a few problems along the way), you just need a few things though like a heat gun and some thermal paste. sounds hard, but it's very easy once you start!

Hope this helps in some way.

When i switch my xbox360 on there is no ound or

are there any red lights on your xbox if so this could be the problem:

e74 or rrod error means that there is an hardware issue.
What you need to do is a very simple and cheap repair.
look on ebay for x clamp repair kits, these are just a few bucks and most sellers include a good guide in how to do the mod/fix.
what causes the rrod or e74 error is the X shape clamp on the underside or the mother board bending and mis-shaping causing the ball soldering on the gpu/cpu slightly melting and forming hairline cracks in the solder.
The x-clamp kit will apply more pressure to the gpu/cpu and a little trick of disconnecting the fans and turning on the xbox and allowing it to overheat will re melt the solder ball joints to fill the hairline cracks.
Depending on which chip is the issue you may also need a 2000 watt heat gun instead of using the over heating method (the gpu chip).
Replacing the heat pads on the heat sink with thermal paste which comes with the kit will keep the gpu/cpu cooler and you wont have this issue again.
Please make sure you buy the kit which comes with heat treated nylon washers as the steel spring washes fail!.
The repair takes around 1-2 hours
I hope this helps in fixing you xbox.

After RRoD fix, hangs at splash screen and no front lights

ya appliyng thermal past does little if
nothing for the problem your discribing.
did you heat up the G.P.U. and keep
the C.P.U.cool wth the fan till you got
two reds? if that the case there may
be more diconects under the G.P.U
It is fixable but you need specail equipent
that will compress both sides of
the chip as you heat it to around
320c that will fix problem boards like
yours 90% of the time

Xbox goes from 3 light rrod to 2 light rrod

2 lights: overheating but in your case most likely bad contact between either the CPU or GPU with the heatsink. Check all your washers and make sure they are even. If missing one it will create an unevent surface. If all looks good try put more thermal compound.

3 red lights: still not working after replacing the xclamps.
solution: try the heat gun fix and you will have much better luck.
I have already posted on a different site you can check it out.

Xbox360 screen wont show

If it's under 3 years old and you've never opened it up then Microsoft(1-800-4MY-XBOX) will fix it under warranty. Otherwise you'll need to do the x-clamp fix. I've used the kit from http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/ring_of_light_x-clamp_fix.htm to fix this problem for a friend. Good luck

2 red lights after fix

Its still a heatsink issue.... make sure you clean all of the old thermal paste off and put high quality paste over it... Also make sure that the heatsink is TIGHT!.... if its loose it can overheat.
