Question about Kwikset Locks & Locksmithing

Open Question

New Schlage deadbolt, stuck in un-locked position.

I replaced an 30+ year old Kwikset deadbolt. It was working fine but was very beat up and looked bad. The new lock is a simple mechanical Schlage deadbolt with an exterior key and inside handle. The lock worked smoothly and I could lock and unlock it. The holes in the door were a very tight fit. I needed to tap the parts in place with a screwdriver handle used as a light hammer. Put it did fit, the old deadbolt used the same size holes. Now after two weeks, even with the door open, the handle is very hard to turn, maybe impossible to turn but I'm afraid of breaking it if I turn with more force. There has not been nearly enough time for parts to wear out and It did work fine 2 weeks ago. I locked and unlocked the door a dozen times from both sides before I left. This is installed in rental proper that is an hour away, so I want to think about what could be wrong before making the round trip to fix it.

SOURCE: Schlage deadbolt will not unlock even with the use of a key?

it sounds as though the linkage that pulls the deadbolt back has disengaged... if you undo the screws from the inside of the door and remove the manual knob there will be 2 more screws holding the key lock to the door. A thin flat bar is attached to the key lock that goes through the deadbolt and into the manual knob. This bar turns with the key, sliding the bolt on its track to lock and unlock the door. Once the lock is apart check the key in the lock to see if the bar turns when the key does. then see if there is anything that may be obstructing the deadbolt from sliding. The locks are pretty indestructible so if there is a problem it may have been from the install... perhaps the door is to wide for the lock to engage properly and the lock worked loose in the 6 months that it worked.

How do I fix a Schlage deadbolt. B60 series will not unlock from the inside unless the key is inserted from the outside

With the door open, remove the interior trim (thumb turn) from the door, and using the key, turn the deadbolt to the locked position. Now re-install the thumb turn, in the locked position, and with the key removed see if you are able to unlock the deadbolt. I suspect that the tailpiece (part that sticks out of the lock cylinder and into the thumb turn) is not in the correct position.

Kwikset smartcode parts

It might not be the motor. It could be the electronic circuit that powers the motor. I ran into the same problem with a Kwikset electronic deadbolt. I separated the motor from the electronic circuit board and found that the motor was OK. When I couldn't get replacement parts I bought a Master Lock unit. It's not motorized and uses 4 AAA batteries, which last a long time. Kwikset just wants to sell locks, but the same problem exists with Schlage and other brands - including Master Lock. One year warranty on electronics.

Lock slow to lock

Change the batteries. If it still isn't working correctly, give Kwikset Customer Service a call: 1-800-327-LOCK (5625)
The lock has a lifetime warranty against mechanical failure but only a one year warranty against problems with the electronics; try to convince them it's a mechanical problem.
These Kwikset/Weiserlock Powerbolts have a high number of failures, according to the large percentage of problems listed on this sight.
Consider another brand such as Schlage if you choose to replace it.

Exterior key for deadbolt just turns around and around.

It sounds like the exterior tumbler is bad, it is less expensive to just replace the whole deadbolt than to have the tumbler repaired.

Kwikset Smart Key Deadbolt Won't Unlock

Kwikset Smart Key locks are complete junk. I am a locksmith and I am constantly going from house to house replacing these "dumb key" locks with original kwikset pin tumbler locks. What happens is either your key or the wafers inside the lock wear slightly, slightly enough to cause your keys to not turn, and since these locks cannot be picked due to a side bar system, they must be drilled off and thrown away when this happens Unless you have another access point to get in the house. If you do remove lock from the inside, throw it in the trash, buy original kwikset and replace.

Make sure that the tang from the lock side actually engage the mechanism in other side of the door. If the tang is too short or not engaged the lock will not work. Also check that the two screws connecting the lock to the other side is actually tight.

you can buy some "grafite" powder at lowes that is made for stiff locks, it will grease it up. if that doesnt do it the your problem may be in the plunger. might it be out of line? if so straighten it and make sure the it aligns with the strike plate on the door jamb. one of those are sure to fix it.
