When I start it the mower is powering backwards. I have tried adjusting the cables but nothing changes
If you have a reverse then you must have a forward. You say you are adjusting cables. Where do these cables go? There must be a lever that comes out of the transmission that allows the switching of gears from reverse to forward, look there. If cable is broken or has fallen off this may be you problem. Replace or repair cable and you should be OK. Good Luck Friend.

Pull the air cleaner of to see if fuel is getting to carburetor. If it is then see if its getting fire to the plug by taking out and put the wire back on but be careful not to hold the wire or the plug if fire is week then get a new plug or get a new one and see it that helps

pull your spark plug and see if it will pull then, if so then it is hydro locked with fuel which can be caused y a bad fuel cap, not venting or a stuck open needle in carb causing gas to flood cylinder
Replace head gasket not as big problem as you might think. Normally you have to remove shroud over starter cord then starter housing then a couple of screws in carb. Bracket then all head bolts, remove head install gasket then reverse and look up on net tightening sequence and torque.
