SOURCE: colour printing
Check the following thread, it might apply to your problem. and just as a printer can be fooled to show a low level ink, I guess it can happen the other way around. http://www.fixya.com/problems-solutions/t103191,p342983/Epson-Stylus-Photo-R300-InkJet-Printer.aspx Good luck
SOURCE: Black cartridge not printing
This might sound really silly, but when you removed the protective tape over the cartridge, did it all come off? I had this problem once, and the tape had separated, the coloured part had come off leaving a clear film over the print head. Once I peeled that off, all was well. Hope that helps. Aileen xx

You may have been impacted
from a printhead issue affecting a limited number of our devices. Please visit
the Lexmark support page to determine if your printer is affected with the
printhead issue. You will be asked to enter your model and serial number. Also, make sure your printer is updated. The
firmware update will help give you a highly reliable print system.

For everyday printing you may find that "Quick Print" or "Draft" mode gives good-enough print quality and greatly reduces your ink consumption. In Windows click the preferences button in any print dialog. On Mac you look in the Print Settings pane of the expanded print dialog. If you don't mind small print, you can also try "n-up" printing that will squeeze two or more pages onto a single sheet of paper.
