How do fix my American standard cadet 3 toilet?

Help! I have an American Standard Cadet 3 #4021N 4.8 LPF 1.28 GPF there is a bar code # 7930956475. Have replaced all the seals. I've also replaced the lapper at least five times I've tried them all, from fluid master, American standard # 7381026-400.0070A, TOTO, Korky. My toilet flapper still leaks. I am at a loss. I want to replace the flush valve assembly in hopes that this will stop my toilet from loosing water. I don't know which one to replace it with. I suspect that the flush valve assembly that's in there is not an American standard product. I have measured the hole in the tank, it measure 4". all the flush valves with the exception of the one piece toilet flush valves are 3". Will the AS 738921-100.00toA 3-inch flush valve assembly work with this toilet? I'm about ready to replace the toilet itself. Thanks!

SOURCE: Toilet Refills Every 15-Minutes

I have minute amount of leakage into the bowl causing mold to grow. I believe that it may be the rubber seal for the flapper body to the porcelain.

SOURCE: flapper will not go down

Troy, the flapper otherwise known as the flush valve is easily replaced. They are also very inexpensive. Sometimes they can become distorted due to the clorine in the water and won't operate in the same way they did when it was new. I bet this will fix your issue and save you money as well.

SOURCE: Flush valve drops before bowl completes flush

is the flapper weighted? if it is it will cause it to shut prematurely. one thing you can do is increase the water in the tank. you might have to buy a pvc cuppler to put on the over flow to allow it to fill up more. korky makes a nice flapper thats not weighted

SOURCE: Yellow attachment to flapper in Cadet 3 toilet tank

Some toilet flappers are designed with this some are not. It has to do with the particular flapper design, helping the flapper to stay in the open position to allow a better flush. Anyways you should be to adjust this float up or down to optimize it's usefulness. Trial and error is all you can do, keep watching and flushing until it no longer gets in the way. I hope this helps in at least knowing that for your toilet and the flapper you have, it's suppose to be there. Good luck and thanks for using FIXYA and have a great weekend. Jeff

Try replacing the flapper, they are cheap and so long as the tank and or bowl are not cracked you can replace all of the internal parts and basically have a brand new toilet much cheaper then replacing the entire unit. Go down to your local hardware store and everything you need is in one simple kit with very simple instructions. Good Luck.

Do you turn the screw to the left or right on a american standard toilet to adjust the water level in the toilet tank

Usually to the right will drop the float, deceasring the water level, left will increase the water level.

American standard caded 3 leaking water from tank into toilet and occasionally running every 5 minutes. is this a flapper problem (it seems well seated) or could it be leaking elswhere?

It could be a bad seat around the flapper or the flapper itself. Replace flapper with one designed for the Cadet. Check water level and see it doesn't flow above the overflow tube. if it is above the tube lower the float ball by turning the screw at top of ball.

The siphon mechanism works on a vacuum principle. If there is the slightest damage to the siphon membrane you will experience the problem you describe. A new siphon is required.

Need to know which cadet to install--3 or 4

I only install Kohler commodes and have never had a problem with clogging. All of Kohler commodes have a 3.5 inch flush valve, just pick the style you want.
