Your needle tension would depend on your size needle, size thread, and thickness of material. Try experimenting with tension up or down to see how that works. :-)

Most likely you have zero tension of either top thread of bobbin. Nesting on wrong (bottom) side is almost always a top thread tension issue. See following video on how to test for tension.
When you thread the top thread, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot so the thread will seat properly in the tension disk. When the presser foot is raised, the tension is released and you should be able to pull the top thread with no problem. However, as soon as you lower the presser foot, the tension will activate and you will not be able to pull the top thread. For the tension, begin with it set at the midway point and then tweak it for your particular machine.
Hello Victoria, It appears that the bobbin case you need is extremely common. There are several venders on EBAY that can hook you up with a new bobbin case for under $10.00.
tension can be tricky because it must be adjusted to each different types of fabric and proper needle size to each fabric try google sewing machines then enter the model number and then enter HOW TO THREAD
If you mean the foot control, overheating MIGHT be due to the motor having too much load. This could be due to lack of lube of the machine or any other thing causing excess friction.
These controls normally get warm, but not to the point of smoking unless they get loaded with dust.
