Computer very slow

If your problem is that your computer is very slow and you have upgraded your memory to the maximum, then you should concentrate on cleaning up and optimising the Windows file system.

Download and install the following utility programs that can help you to improve the performance of your computer.

Advanced System Care Free - run the Deep Care option of this utility.
DiskMax - run a Detailed Scan and let it clean up all profiles, updates, cache etc.
Smart Defrag - run a Defrag and Fast Optimize
CCleaner - use this to compliment the above plus use the Tools Uninstall option to remove any unwanted software programs, browser tool bars etc. Also use the Tools Startup option to disable any of the programs being started on every boot that don't need to be, i.e. things like QuickTime, Adobe Reader.

Runing slow, some time not responsive.

Below are some useful tips for making your PC's performance better. Please follow the below steps and fix your problem.
Eliminate Viruses and Spyware 1 . Run your antivirus program. There may be something slowing your computer that you can remove. It is a good idea to run your antivirus program every week.
2 . Remove spyware. Run a good spyware tool at least twice a month.
3 . Use a pop-up blocker, if you have one. Check your antivirus program.
Dispose of the Extras 1 . Delete your document files for anything you no longer need. Saved pictures, audio and video files in particular can slow your computer.
2 . Remove unwanted programs from the Control Panel area. Old toolbars or games the kids downloaded off the Internet are a good place to start.Look for software you no longer use, such as the old printer you threw out last year.
3 . Clean out your email. Old messages are a constant drain on your computer's resources. Go through every folder, deleting everything you do not need. Leave no mail! Finish by emptying the Deleted Items folder.
4 . Turn off unnecessary programs. Check your task bar for icons that show running programs. Disable anything you are not currently using.
Run Maintenance 1 . Run the Disk Cleanup tool located in your Control Panel. (Windows only. For other operating systems, please check the Resources section below.)This will remove temporary files, cookies and unnecessary components to speed up your computer.
2 . Defragment your computer. Defragging takes some time, but will speed your computer significantly. You can find the tool in your Control Panel.Run it monthly.

Hope the above information will be helpful to you. Thanks for using Fixya.

My dell inspiron keeps freezing and the CPU usage is showing 100%. I ran Spybot and nothing came up. I have Norton Internet Security antivirus but it is showing nothing. Tried to run a defrag but it...

At this juncture your best bet is to run the msconfig command and see what is running in the background and using up all of your resources.

Antivirus programs are wicked for screwing up a machine, especially Norton. Dump the sucker - might even have to get a special program to accomplish this.

If that does not do it then just backup your files and restore your machine to its as new condition using the software that came with your unit.

Computer takes longer to boot up, plus is running very slow

1. To increase PC boot speed:
There must be too many programs automatically start when you boot your PC. To manage them, click Run, type in "msconfig", select "Boot", then you can disable unnecessary programs from that list.

2. To increase PC running speed:
* Adding RAM is the most effective method, but if the RAM is already at the maximum, then do the following.
* Run disk cleanup and defragmenter. But to be honest, the built-in Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter run quite slow and they will take you quite a long time, so I never use them. Third-party programs are better.
* Run registry optimizer software and defrag. No Windows built-in tools to do this. Search on google or refer to this free registry cleaner review.
