I imagine could be few possibilities why:
bad motor
bad gear, roller, belt or something other connecting motor to feeding mechanism
bad or dirty paper sensor (scanner doesnt recognize that paper is inserted)
May not to be cost effective to repair it.

The battery cover is the silver-colored "hump" on the right side of the scanner. Just slide it to the right, and it'll unhook from the scanner, giving you access to the battery compartment.

Anything larger than 1 GB is ok. There is no specification the more scans you want to do, the bigger the card should be
