Singer 7442 - Needle hitting bottom

My wife's 7442 sewing machine is not working correctly. The needle seems to go down to far. After removing the bobbin holder, I can see that the needle hits bottom at the very end of the gap made for it...like the spinning part is off where it's supposed to be. The slot is not lined up properly when the needle comes down. Is this a major problem or can I fix it myself. If so, how?

Yeah, I have the same problem. The timing is off, and I have no idea how to fix it on this type of bobbin set-up. I can't even get the case fully apart which is extremely frustrating.

I purchased what was supposed to be an original Singer Extension Table for my machine. Upon receipt, I attempted to assemble it onto the machine. The width of the slot is correct, The End Prongs are correct, yet the prongs to hold it at the end of the arm are the incorrect size. In addition the slot that should be about 3.5" wide x 5.25" Long is too short, as the opening should be 3.5" wide x 7-7.25" Long.

FIRST DETERMIN NEEDLE BAR POSITION TURN STITCH REGULATOR TO LARGEST STITCH, THEN TURN HAND WHEEL TIL' NEEDLE IS ABOUT TO ENTER NEEDLE PLATE.
AT THIS POINT THE FEED DOGS SHOULD BE JUST AT OR JUST UNDER PLATE. IF SO NEEDLE BAR IS, IN CORRECT POSITION,AND TIMING WILL BE SET AT THE HOOK.
TO SET TIME REMOVE NEEDLE PLATE TURN HAND WHEEL SO NEEDLE IS IN LOWEST POSITION. USING A SMALL RULE RAISE NEEDLE BAR 3/32 OF AN INCH ( OR 3 MM FOR A METRIC RULE) .HOOK POINT SHOULD BE IN CENTER OF NEEDLES WIDTH. LOOSEN THE 2 SHAFT SCREWS
SLIGHTLY,TURN HOOK TIL CENTER OF NEEDLE. TIGHTEN SCREWS. IF NEEDLE BAR IS OUT OF TIME. BRING HOOK TO CENTER OF NEEDLE AND LOOSEN SCREW IN LEFT COVER. RAISE OR LOWER NEEDLE BAR TO SET 3/32OF AN INCH. THE 3/32 MUST BE VERY VERY CLOSE.

    Hello Mr Cognetti;
According to my calculator, 3/32"= 2.38mm (i.e., under 2-1/2 mm), not 3mm as you say.
    Whereas 3mm = .118" (ie, 3.78/32", almost 4/32", not 3/32" as you say.)

Can you please tell me which distance is correct? As you say, this distance is pretty critical.

The needle keeps hitting the bobbin casing and breaking???

Sounds as if you have a bent needle or you are not putting the needle in correctly. Flat part should be at back, push as far up as you can before tightening.

5417 Mechanical Sewing Machine: ok when my needle goes down it seems to hit someth...

If the needle is not in all the way it will bottom out in the shuttle, or if you bought new needles and accedently got the wrong ones. If the needle does not enter the needle plate far enough to be bottoming out then the machine is out of time. You know i was about to hit post it and I realized I didn't think about, if the needle is bent it will hit the hook. so check those things hope it works out.

Singer 7442 Needle seems 2b 2 long.Hits something below

I strongly recommend you desist from using the sewing machine on a levis. It could be that the capacity is not for that thick material like levis.

I had similar problem till I had to take it in for repairs because mine was discovered to have had a shift in the footer below the needle compartment where the clothes are been laid before sewing.

Look closely at the footer.

Good luck dear.

I care so much.

My Singer 7442 seems like the timing is wrong. when the need comes down in any position except far right is stop when it hits the bobbin case.

make sure needle isn't bent, if that's ok timing is out. Timing is a very precise ordeal, do you have a tech near by or would you like to send out

We gaurantee timing for 2yrs, shipping is not on us though..lol but still cheaper

PLEASE HELP MY SEWING MACHINE!!!!

Take the needle plate off and turn the needle up and down by hand while watching to see if it is hitting anything. The hook timing could be off.

Needle position jammed?

First make sure you are using a needle that is recommended by your model. Secondly make sure the needle is inserted correctly. The flat side of the needle needs to be against the flat bar that makes the needle go up and down. After this, unplug the power supply and let it set for a couple of minutes. This gives the computer time to re-set itself.
Hope these suggestions work!

Singer 7442 is Loud!

Check to see that lint or oil has not collected on the hook or needle bar. Always use a good quality sewing machine oil. A damaged needle can also be the cause of a noisy machine - insert a new needle.
