If it was a toshiba supplied disk, then I should follow up with them with the failure, as it was their fix, that caused this problem, they should replace/repair this unit for you

Check for bad connections on the display pins themselves. Specifically, the ones on the ends are the power/ground pins.
Let us know if that resolves the problem. If not, we'll look further into the circuitry.

The EPG is the electronic program guide trying to download TV listings.

This is normal for this player. To disable this, you would need to turn off the TV guide function.
SOURCE: Can't get the VCR to record. The DVD light is on
Are you trying to use the Timed Recording mode or the OTR (one-touch recording)? For timed recording, you need to turn off the VCR by pressing Stop or with the power button after programming it. It will not turn off on its own. Pressing Stop twice or the Power button will stop the programmed recording. So turning the device on or off for the DVD side of the unit may interrupt the program.
Other things to check: Turn on the DVD player/VCR combo. Insert a blank tape (or one with sufficient space for the amount/speed of the desired recording schedule) that has an intact Record Safety tab.
Then either set the channel to record (or line in 1 or 2 for set-top box signals) and press the REC button several times to get the desired recording length. The recording length changes by 30 minutes with each press.
If you are using the timed record, you'll need the tv on to see the programming menus. Press Menu or Timer with the unit in play or stop mode to enter the Menu. Use the Up/Down arrows to select Program. Press the right arrow button and then use the Up/Down arrows to set the channel that you want to record. Press the right arrow to advance to the next step. Again use the Up/Down arrows and the right arrow to set the start time, end time, date and recording speed. Then set if the program will be repeated.
Press Stop or Power to set the program.
I hope this helps.
