Make sure you have fresh batteries in your camera. If that doesn't do try the auto function on the camera, so if you are in a dark area it will flash.

Just bought a Nikon D40 Camera and sometimes when I view pictures that have been taken, the pictures get distorted. Is this common or and easy fix. dee

Your pictures are most probably distorted because of camera shake.
If you invest in a Nikon lens with VR = vibration reduction or a Sigma hsm os = optical stabilization, this will allow you to shoot at slower speeds and will reduce camera shake.

The most obvious problem will be shooting in low light conditions without vr or os...this will give blurred images. You will need to up the iso and shutter speed with a wide aperture to achieve more stable images.
Bear in mind, when you raise the iso, you will get noiser images and the Nikon D40 does not handle noise very well - but can be eliminated with software.
Hope this helps.

ACESS TO ISO ABOVE 1600 eg HO.3 HO.7 H1.0

They're equivalent to ISO 2000, 2500, and 3200, respectively. You just select them the same way you select any other ISO setting. They work with everything else in the camera. Just be aware that you're going to get more noise the higher you set the ISO.

NIKON D70

The higher the ISO setting the more grain in the photo. Have you somehow set the ISO to say, 1600? http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d70s/select.php?menu=1&sub=b11&num=12 Select ISO setting this way: http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d70s/select.php?menu=1&sub=b05&num=10 Are you shooting in low-light situations (typically indoor)? Try shooting bright scenes and Auto mode, or manually set ISO to 100 or 200 and see if noise persists.
