You might try some lubricant like Vaseline ,sewing machine oil ,DW40 or even cooking oil and after you have soaked the zipper and along the track both ways use a pair of pliers or similar to grasp the zipper and move it in the direction that should open the zipper ! this might be difficult at the start so dont use excessive force in fact a push and pull method often works best ( or pull one way and then the other )because a realignment of the zippers teeth is often what is required and forcing the zipper can often tear them away from the material and a zipper replacement would then be necessary, other causes of stuck zippers are things like stray cotton or material caught up in the teeth and zipper ! If you do end up having to force the zipper maybe replace the zipper with a strong Velcro or a more robust zipper with larger teeth .

I have a Kirby Heritage 84. Great condition except the part that connects the innerbag is missing. I don't even know what it is called. I can open the vacuum cleaner bottom and see that the part is...

The Heritage 84 had two different bag assemblies available. One is a dump-out bag. The dirt simply dumps through the bottom. The other is the bagged style which has a full length zipper to open it. Inside it should contain a "bag fill tube", and a top adapter to attach the bag onto. The oval fill tube is no longer available, but a round tube can be installed with a bit of efort.

Kirby G5 rear wheels lock up completely when in "Drive"

When wheels lock when vacuum is OFF - it is normal. If it happens when Kirby is ON then there are a few things that may have gone wrong

Primary drive belt is broken or something is wrong with plastic gears. See how to check the primary drive belt HERE.

If it is fine and gears are spinning - then something must be wrong inside the transmission. Parts for tech drive are not available from manufacturer so you are on your own. It is not really complicated - 2 clutches that engage and disengage depending which direction you push the vacuum. But if something in there is broken - you have to get a new tranny. It is not like getting a transmission for a truck but it still will set you back by about 100 $.

Good Luck

We have an older Kirby cloth-bag upright cleaner--inherited from family member. How do we empty the bag? The model # seems to be "Classic III"

Take the bag off (turn it counterclockwise a bit and it will slide off the exhaust). Take it somewhere outside and holding over garbage container open a latch on the bottom of the metal bag bottom part (miniemptor). Now entire bottom will open and dirt and dust will start falling out. If there is a zipper on the bag - open it and insert your hand into sort of a sock that will allow you to grab chunks of dust and push them towards the opening on the bottom without getting your hands too dirty.

How to use my Kirby carpet cleaner?

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.
This is kind of a general question and I will try to explain the best I can. Most Kirby’s have a vacuum head and sometimes a shampoo head, the vacuum head is removable on most Kirby’s and the vac head comes off the front for a brushroll and belt change. When you vacuum and you go to adjust the vacuum head, raise the height adjustment all the way u to the top with your foot, then listen to the tone change, @ first you will hear air pulling thru and the brush has not hit the carpet as of yet, that is the sound the you are listening for, once the brushroll hits the carpet – there is a definite tone change and that is when you have it adjusted correctly, try to vacuum with it set that way, if it is picking up well – you’re OK, if not adjust if down one more click. Also remember to do a belt change every 4 to 6 months for good cleaning, change the bag more often because it will pup better with a new belt and bag, or if you don’t have a paper bag, take and scrape the inside of the cloth bag with the scraper provided in the small zipper section. Please refer to the owner’s manual or trouble shooting guide or to your local vacuum cleaner dealer or in the yellow pages, also you can use the Kirby factory or website listed below:

Kirby

kirby style 2 bags if it is indeed a bagged unit, some where special order with what is called a shake out bag, if your outer bag has a short zipper with a cloth pocket it is a shake out bag in which you take the assembly loose from the machine and open the bottom of the metal empter and take out side and basically shake out the dirt. and use the pocket to help get out the dirt. but most of these machines did take a style 2 bag in which you unzip the outer bag and pull the paper bag away from the tube and reinsert new one onto tube and finally zip up bag

Cleaning upholstery with the Kirby?

it depends on the make of the kirby you are using but most kirby systems come with a portable shampooer and special shampoo. I would not recommend using your zip brush for shampooing purposes, the zippbrush is designed to loosen up dog hair, dirt, ect. when vacuuming. to shampoo upholstery do the following: remove bag from side of machine, place hose where bag goes, remove power head from front of the machine, place air intake valve on front of machine where power head was (intake valve kinda shaped like a pig nose with small holes on end) attach portable shapooer to end of hose and fill with water and kirby shampoo spray shampoo witch is foamy looking on whatever you are shampooing, rub into fabric w/a brush and let sit till dry. when dry turn kirby back into a hand held vacuum by putting powerhead back on front of machine and putting bag back on side of machine, then vacuum furiture. (make sure it is 100% dry before you vacuum because Kirby is not a wet vac!) Hope this helped ya out a little
