Yes, you can change from a tricolor ink cartridge to a black ink cartridge. Power on the printer and open the ink cartridge access door. Halt until the carriage moves to the center and turns idle. Open the tricolor ink slot cover and take the cartridge out. The ink in the ink cartridge clogs when it is exposed to open air for more than thirty minutes. So, send the cartridge to the manufacturer for recycling. Purchase a genuine HP 92 black color ink cartridge from a trusted seller. Insert it into the empty tricolor ink slot. Close the ink slot cover and access panel. Load papers into the input tray and print a test document. If the doc prints correctly, then the cartridges are installed successfully. If the doc does not print, press and hold the Paper Feed button for five seconds and then release it. Restart the printer and click OK on the message stating that Genuine Cartridges Installed.
It won't recognise the black cartridge in the printer and may even throw an error code. Use the black and white option setting for printing.

Yes, this printer has fixed printheads and must have ink in each color to prevent damage to the printheads. Even when printing black only each color is spit in the servicing area to keep the printhead unclogged.

no it cannot. Those multi-colored cartridge system requires that you put in every single color, AND ensure that they are not empty before they will print. Even if all you want is a black and white copy.

To solve the
printing problem..
# Hold the cartridge upside down, with the
bar-code label facing you and take a damp paper towel.
# Use the towel to wipe the printhead of the
cartridge on the bottom (where the ink comes out). Wipe the printhead
horizontally in one direction only (left to right).
# Continue doing this until it looks clean.
# Then dab the cartridge on the towel to make sure
the ink is flowing.
# Next, look inside the printer and locate the
carrier that holds ink cartridges. Caution: Make sure the cartridges are not
installed at this point.
1. Look for a shiny piece of metal underneath the
contacts at the back of the carrier.
2. Take a damp cotton swab (use water only!) and
wipe along the bottom of the shiny metal piece. Note: You may need more than
one swab.
# Reinstall the cartridges, making sure you snap
them correctly into the printer.

Hi,
Go to Control Panel->Printers. Then right click on your printer and select printing preferences. There you will see an option like Print in Grayscale or Black and White only.
However, please note that some printers although they are set to print in grayscale they also use the color cartridge and some even don't allow you to print in grayscale if the color cartridge is empty. Why is that? Manufacturer's way of charging you more money.
