If no spark after new plug, check your kill switch for proper function, if that is working correctly you will need to check the pick up coil and gap on flywheel. Check your plug wire also for continuity in case of faulty wire.
Spark is pretty simple to get back most of the time, just dont want to start swapping parts for no reason.

Change the spark plug for a new clean one. Make sure you are using the correct gas/oil mixture.

SOURCE: 5 HP Briggs and Stratton Engine

Take the coil off clean with sand paper then get a piece of cardboard from a cereal box or cigarette box, put the piece of cardboard in between the coil and the magnetic strip on the flywheel ''believe it or not it is the perfect gap'' 'let the magnet pull the two together'' then tighten the coil down. if still no spark get a new coil.

17.5 hp briggs and stratton mower - mowing fine - stopped to gas up - will not start back up - back fires a few times while turning motor over

sounds like you may have a broken valve spring. Do a compression test as you crank it. If the valve spring is broken, you will get nearly zero compression, it will turn over very easily and this would explain a couple of backfires.

5 h.p. briggs and stratton outboard motor shuts off

This has puzzled me a few times in the past. It is most likely related to a fuel issue. If you have an external tank, make sure there is no debris or water in the bottom (looks like a big bubble under the gas), next I would check to make sure the fuel lines are not cracked allowing air to enter. This could also be caused by a bad o-ring at the connector on the fuel tank or motor or the connector is not securely connected.
