SOURCE: If you where going to Buy one radio which one would you Buy?

I am a marine electronics technician with 28 years experience. I have also been a licensed amateur radio operator for the past 12 years. Based on my professional experience with both brands (Icom and Yaesu), I have to advise you to go with one of the Icom units. The Yaesu is a good radio, but Icom's customer support is far superior. I have had no problems dealing with their service department over the years, something I can't say about Yaesu.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: How to program an Icom IC-R5 handheld scanner

to store a fcy press BAND to go to your fcy range ie 118.000 airband
dial your fcy ie 127.900(shanwick ocean area control) press and hold V/M for 1 sec, small numbers now blink, dial the memory slot you wish to store into ie 001 then press V/M again for 1sec and this will store 127.900 into mem slot 001. make a list:-
mem number / fcy / mode(am - fm) / station / bank
to prog a fcy into a "bank", press V/M for 1sec - blinking mem numbers - dial mem number ie 001(127.900) press MODE - "bank" flashes past-
-- -- -- -- 001 shows, turn dial to show A-00 this is the first "bank", pressing BAND scrolls through all the alpha "banks" - choose one.. ie A-00 (for airband..) press V/M this puts mem 001 into "bank" A mem slot 00, there are 100 slots in each letter 00 to 99. do this to any fcy you want to scan as a group.
to scan a bank press V/M - small numbers appear -
press BAND to scroll through any "banks" you have created ie A B C D etc (only banks with fcys in will display), press MODE -"bank"- press MODE again and you will start scanning just that "bank" of mem slots.
MODE starts and stops the scan... each letter holds 100 mem slots.. happy scanning!!!

Just check the PTT receive/trasmit switch for malfunctioning first. This switch comes at the HM 36 hand microphone. If this switch got defective this type of fault will occur. This switch have to be hold down to transmit signal. Check the UP and DOWN push switches also for any defect.
There is a HM-36 schematic diagram in your device's manual to compare this connections. Refer it. Other chances for this fault is rare. If you wants further assistance, feel free to contact me through fixya. OK.

It stuck in squeck mode when you turn it on

Start with simple things first. If using a hand mic, ground it as if it were hung up in a vehicle. Now look for the squelch knob, it likely does more than 1 thing. Try it all the way clockwise, then counter clockwise as you turn it on. Please let us know on your progress.

Hallo iam using a icom 718 on 28mhz up to 14mhz have a problem of a high swr reading but the antenna is fine then power drop away

Check the feedline to the antenna, and the antenna itself. High SWR means that power is being reflected back from the antenna. A good discussion of SWR may be found here:

If you antenna is designed for 10M and your are trying to transmit 20M on it, there will be a significant mis-match. You may want to look at installing a better broadband antenna, such as an OCFD that will operate better on multiple bands.

How to get up/down functions on hp508 ham mic to work with icom 718

The IC-718 requires a 470Ohm resistor for the down button and grounds pin three with the up button directly. That isn't standard on the hp508 mic. It is designed so that the up/down buttons work for kenwood radios, and they are completely different. The kenwood uses pin three for down and pin 4 for up and they use a different pin for ground. You could make a special cable with the resistor built in and the correct pins connected to the up/down buttons and that would work.
