It has a bunch of locking tabs around the base of it. Get your fingers underneath it and pry it up until it pops off. Found a good video showing the procedure -

NEED TO REMOVE AN AGITATOR FROM A WASHING MACHINE

  • 1 First you must determine the brand of washing machine you have.

  • 2 To remove agitator on a whirlpool washer, remove top cap from agitator, Next you will find a translucent cap, remove this with your pliers. Then you will see a 3/8 inch nut, Back this nut out and you can then remove the agitator. Be Careful though, inside the agitator where the bolt has been removed is a white piece of plastic that holds the "dog ears". These dog ears are what lets the agitator move in one direction and locks when the transmission moves back in the other direction.

Maytag and Admiral washers are very similar to remove. General Electric, (GE) is different, To remove a GE agitator simply pull upwards very hard, GE agitators snap on. Be careful not to pop it into your mouth, that really hurts.

  • 3 Remove agitator, repair or replace and reset, GE just push on, you will be able to see the groves to line up the agitator to the hub. For whirlpool place bolt into dog ear guide, and set down on top of transmission post and tighten, be careful that dog ears, do not get out of alignment. That's it.

    Remove the agitator

First thing you need to do is remove the top of the agitator, it should pull out fairly easily. Once that is done you should be able to look down in it and see the bolt you'll need to remove. Once removed, the agitator can be pulled out

Agitator loose does not swish clothes around .... can't figure out how to remove the agitator in order to see what may have come loosened or if splines are stripped .... how do you remove the agitator ?

Hello, on the style GE washer there is an agitator coupling under the agitator that will sometimes strip out. To repair this remove the agitator by pulling it straight up and out.
TIP: If you can't get your fingers under the agitator, you can slip a belt under the agitator and then pull by that, once the agitator is off you should see a yellow coupling held on by a 7/16 bolt, remove that bolt and pull the coupling up and off the transmission shaft. Sometimes it will be hard to remove and you might need to knock it up with a hammer. Once it is off you should be able to slide the new one back on, bolt it down and push the agitator back on.
    Thanks

GE WDSR2080D4WW top load washer agitator - Is there a cog type thing in the agitator that could be jammed & if so, how can the agitator be removed? I think whatever connects the agitator to the motor...

pull out the agitator. this may be difficult because soap gets built up underneath and250 acts almost like a glue. use a leather belt and put it under the agitator and pull straight up. once you get it off you will see a bolt holding down a coupling. take the bolt out and replace the coupling with a new one. this should solve your problem with the machine not agitating. the part # for the bell coupling is: WH43X10009.

GE Washer WJSR2080V3WW will fill, spin and drain but not agitate.

The problem is the agitator coupler (about $ 7.00) simply pull straight up on the agitator - Give it a good tug. take the one bolt holding the coupler off - pull straight off. Replace the coupler and bolt (they are sold together). Line the agitator lines up with the coupler lines - when they line up it should go all the way down and snap back into place. and your done.

    Shoestrings wrapped under agitator

You will have to remove the agitator. Remove the softener dispenser from the top of the agitator and when you look down the agitator, you will see a 10mm stainless steel bolt. You will need to remove this bolt to remove the agitator. If there is no bolt, try pulling the agitator up and out.
