SOURCE: I have a Dirt Devil
Some of the Dirt Devils have a reset button on the back, near the bottom. But if the it is getting hot on the bottom, that may mean the motor is trying to run but can't. Maybe something has jammed it. You would have to disasemble it to find out.

Older Oreck XL, new belt, new bag, checked for clogs, does not pick up
as it used to, and, much harder to push, seems to grab or drag, why????
Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. There are a couple of things that may work. Depending on if you have the old style brushroll you can upgrade to a new style Oreck brushroll that has twice the brushes and will a work a lot smoother. Also, clean the bottom plate – get rid of any dust and dirt build up and then spray the bottom with silicone and let it dry after you have totally cleaned it. Always use Oreck genuine belts and to change the belt every 4 to 6 months for the best cleaning and store the extra Oreck belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator, other wise if you have a new belt, gag, you have checked for clogs there is no reason why it should be hard to push, if the silicone does not work replace the bottom plate.

If you are sure the base is clear, and that the flexible hose and attachment tube are clear, the only other common place for a blockage is the swivel neck that joins the base to the bottom of the dust bag housing. Here's what to do:
Press the housing release button (front bottom of bag housing) and lift off the bag housing from the base. This can be quite hard (three or four hands would be helpful) but be sure to lift straight. When you've got the bag housing off, release the foot pedal and lower the swivel neck to 45 degrees. Check inside the swivel neck channel closest to the foot pedal, and clean it out as necessary.
If this doesn't work, please post again and I'll see what else I can do... If it does help, please rate me!

Suggest you check the wheels to see if they are moving freely. Also check the beater brush to see that it is moving freely. Be sure the belt has not broken. If it has, replace with a new one. Also take the time to clean the beater brush of any debris and spray a little WD40 on both ends of the beater brush axle.

The bag has a cardboard collar with latex. It must seal over the inlet. Make sure not to tear the bag when replacing.
Is the cover closing properly? The cover seals against a gasket. The same with the filter.
If this is ok, then there probably is still something clogged in the system, Up inside the bottom of the vacuum there is a hole where the dirt goes in to get to the bag. That's where the clog probably is. Also if If the belt is stretched, then it can't turn the brush rol under load, if you haven't chenged it in the last 6 months, then I would put a new one one. Also check the dirt inlet by the brush roll for a blockage. Last but not least, the base plate on a vacuum must fit tightly against the bottom of the vacuum for it to get good suction. this is a culprit on a lot of repairs so make sure the bottom of the vacuum is put togethere correctly and tightly.
