There is kind of a gray area when it comes to multipurpose electronics. Not many are supported by universal remotes, this includes VCR/DVD combos. It gets even more confusing when you have the VCR/DVD/TV combo. You need a remote that can handle each function separately and you need to understand that each function must be used separately. You need to switch between functions to use the individual parts of the combo(eg switch to tv to turn it on and off, switch to DVD for dvd Functions and VCR for VCR functions). You are better of trying to order a replacement remote from the company. Most companies offer replacement remotes incase you lose them. It will cost about 15-25 bucks depending on the remote, but Philips usually carries them all, even several discontinued models, just incase you need them. There are also other electronic sites, such as radioshack.com that carries older and multifunction remotes for a specific product. If you, however, feel obligated to use the universal: 1. make sure that it can handle all the functions of the device, and 2. look at the brand and model number of the remote, check on the company's website, in the support section, for the manual for that remote, the manual usually has the code lists for the various components it supports. Make sure to download and print this out for future reference. Make sure to keep the manual in a safe place so you can find it should you need it again. I hope this helps.

I don't know if you guys even need this advice anymore, as it's 1-2 years late, but if your universal remote has a VCR setting, the Emerson 13" CRT TV/VCR combo I have operates under that mode.
The code I used was 002. These may also work: 278, 184, 479, 000, 121, 211, 037, 043, 061, 208
Remember, program your remote as if you were setting up a VCR (and NOT a TV). For instance, on my GE universal, I hold the "code search" button down until I get a steady light. I hit VCR, and then I entered 002. Works like a charm.
