Question about GE Cooktops

Open Question

GE Cooktop (ZGU385NSMSS) center knob glows red an burners keep clicking even when turned off. What would cause this?

Replaced spark module. Didn't help. Though I read something about a bad switch could cause it. Is that what I should replace next?

I realize it's a little late in this game but I had a similar problem with my 2003 TDI. Sometimes it just wouldn't start, Dealer came and picked it up once to replace the battery under warranty and did all sorts of diagnostics to no avail. My brother suggested the ignition switch, so I watched it for several weeks and sure enough, new switch under warranty, problem gone for 4 years now.

Center Burner stays lit and will not stop trying to ignite unless it is unplugged. If I need to order parts please tell me what I would need to fix this problem.

Hello Donna ,
If by saying "stays lit" ya mean that the flame goes off when turning off the knob yet it continues to spark all the time ?? if yes that's whats happening the flame goes off but it keeps sparking whats wrong it that the switch that turns on the spark when the knob is turned is bad and that is what needs to be replaced. GE only makes that switch available in a complete assembly with all 5 switches and the wiring for it. It's not to bad to replace that actually,what ya would need to do to replace that switch harness asm. ya need to take off the main top which can be done by removing the burner grates and caps from the burners,then is the outer center of each burner will be 2 screws remove those screws from all burners then the all 5 knobs and the top will lift off,that switch harness has keyed plugs and will only fit in one way so its not to bad to replace it. The part number for that switch/wire harness asm. is WB18T10381 it could be purchased at your local appliance parts store or online at;
Thank you for using Fixya.Com,if you should require further assistance please reply and i will be happy to help,

My gas cooktop is contiuing a clicking sound to start the gas burner. it is not the color of the flame or that stuff. Just the starter keeps trying to start. the gas burner that is all. Blair

Hello Blair
Does the clicking or spark stop with all knobs in off position? If so it's probably the one burner valve for the one you're trying to light ,stuck in light mode, sending signal to module.Have that burner valve replaced.($50). (2) If clicking continues even though everything is off, it could be any one of the burner valves or your ignition module is messed up .You would have to pull wire off each burner valve one by one to find the offending valve . If not valves then suspect ignition module.
Easily fixed either way.

Feedback appreciated !

My GE Profile propane gas cook top was just installed yesterday. When I go to turn on one of the burners, all of the ignitors click. This can't possibly be normal. Anyone else have this issue?

Yes, thats okay when you turn the knob voltage gets sent to the spark module, Then the module sparks all the burner igniter. And frame ignition only happens on the single burner of the knob you turned that sends gas to the burner associated with that knob.

Please rate me a "4" if this information was useful.

GE profile gas cooktop - sparker firing with knobs turned off?

replace your spark module
have you spilled liquid on the cooktop recently?
if yes let it dry for a couple of days and see what happens.
sometimes when you spill liquid on the cooktop it grounds out the spark module and it will continue to spark until it drys.
let me know if you need more help

GE Profile nat gas cooktop, Model No JGP636BEV3BB won't ignite

If you can hear the clicking sound but are not getting a spark then there is probably a short in the ignition system. Check for any loose wires on the ignition system. Make sure all the wires are properly seated. Make sure the spark module is properly grounded. As far as testing the spark module it should be generating a spark of course. The problem is that the average voltage for the spark module is 15,000 VDC so actual testing of that voltage can be difficult. Is the spark erratic?(should spark evenly). An erratic spark timing is a sign of a bad spark module. Is the spark slow? Check the polarity of the electrical plug. If it is clicking evenly then it is probably arcing somewhere inside the cooktop and you just need to find out where. Also be aware that if you get water into the cooktop that can cause possible grounding of the spark module or ignition system.

Have Jenn-Air 36" gas cooktop w. 5 burners, black. Mdl JGC8536ADB. Plastic knobs keep splitting, even if we remember to push down before turning. Have replaced two sets and now we're down to two working...

Thanks for using FixYa. There are a few things to check for. Make sure the electrode (the small metal piece that the spark comes off from) is clean and the holes in the burner are clean, use a pin or paper clip to clean out the burner holes and not a tooth pick as these can break off and make things worse. Example of a burner. The next thing to check for are the ignition switches under the surface control knobs, the switches can twist and break and keep the spark module on and the spark keeps "clicking" even when the burner is light. If every thing looks good, you may have a bad spark module, replace it.
The switches or the range control knobs may have got wet and are completing the circuit to the spark module thus causing it to continuously click or fire off sparks continuously. Use your hair/blow dryer and blow some hot air around the spark module area.

This is a typical spark module wire diagram--

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.
