1996 Pontiac Firebird.... feels fine as long as i stay below 40mph. After that, it has trouble accelerating and if i press on the gas it starts clunking and sometimes gets so bad it feels like the entire car will fall apart. When it gets to this point it always stays at 1500rpms and its hard to get it any higher. Once i hit 60mph or so it stops, but if i have to stop or slow down, then speed back up it continues. It gets worse as it gets warmer. Another similar problem to this one had a response that said it was the driveshaft, but that was it and i have no idea what that means.... please help! i am in the military and dont have much time to take it places to get it checked out.
Is the check engine light on? If it is, take the car to an autoparts store and have them use a scan tool to retrieve any fault codes that are stored in the computer. Most parts stores will do the scan for free. It could be something like a faulty throttle position sensor, but getting the codes wll tell the tale. Hope this helped and best wishes.
