First try setting your contrast and brightness. It's a balancing act so you'll work with, but put more on the contrast. Also if you have access to a user friendly picture adjustment work with it. That increases the amplitude going to your color guns and your color temperature. If these are not on the set itself take you remote and hit menu and brouse the menu for control of these functions. Hue is an important function, it mixes red and green to get facial tones true. I hate to tell you this part, that's why I saved it for last. What you described it a good sign of the screen wearing out. It's the same thing that happens ocassionally in TVs with CRT Tubes.
Hope the adjustments fix it,
This mite sound crazy but it is time to change the oil in your TV. Yes your TV has three seperate picture tubes on the inside of it. A red tube, blue tube, and green tube. Each one of thses tubes has a clear oil that the light shines through. Over time this oil gets cloudy and distorts the light thus dimming and fadeing your picture please have a tech change the oil in your tubes.
if it is a tube type unit you may not find a new tube they are almost extinct ,
also, most tube malfunctions are caused by improper voltage, only a qualified tech should work on the high voltage section of a tube tv,,, it can kill you even if it has Not Been Plugged in for a whole year
re-post with the make and model number for further assistance
