Use your knuckles to knock on top of cabinet just above disc tray door while at the same time pressing open button,99% of the time disc tray will open. The problem you have is caused by a worn out belt drive or the tray is out of alignment. The disc tray belts only cost $2,when tray is open you can see the minature belt that controls door to the right.Use twizzers to remove and replace.Belt size 1.9

I tried this method, but mine still won't open. I've recorded and formatted a disc, but I can't get the tray to open to release the disc. Any other suggestions?

Are you sure you knocked on the TOP of cabinet just above the disc tray door, once again you must push the open button at the same time.90 % of the time it will open.
Tray doors won't open for three reasons a bad belt, tray misalignment, the third being jammed gears. The most common is a bad belt.Have you had trouble with the door before? When you try what I said, does it attempt to open?
If you have hit the tray with your hand in the past you may of thrown it out of alignment. If belt is a little loose from age or it the tray is out of alignment a wee bit it usually will open by this tapping on the cabinet. If the belt is broken or tray is way out of alignment or if the gear inside the burner is jammed you can only open door by opening cabinet,if the gear is jammed it is best to replace the entire loader/burner.This is best left to a professional. WARNING :NEVER OPEN CABINET WHILE PLUGGED IN you could suffer electrical shock or laser burns.Even if unplugged never touch the power supply with anything metal, sometimes it will still have an electrical charge in it.
Some people have removed the disc tray cover if it keeps sticking repeatedly because of alignment problems but of course to this you have to have the disc tray open.If you are lucky enough to get it open you will see the little black belt that operates pulley,it is size 1.9.If you get it open and want to remove disc tray cover press open and pull electrical plug in the open position so the door won't close, then grap the tray with one hand securely(so as to not effect alignment)with your other hand grap disc tray cover and twist upward. This little cover snaps on and off. There are two hidden adustment screws behind this little cover. To adjust turn each screw only a quarter turn and snap back on a try it.You might have to try this several times to get it just right.
DIsc tray sticking is very common on some of these older Liteon models.Fortunately they have had very few problems with the hard drive. In fact your model is kind rare and is worth fixing.

I actually tried lots of suggestions I found posted on various models (mine is an LVW-5005X, with firmware altered to be an ILO). None of them worked. I did open up the case and took the cover off the top of the drive. I did find the little sticky gasket in the middle, which had almost glued itself to my disc. So I manually removed my disc and rubbed baby powder on the gasket to cancel out the stickiness. Another reviewer mentioned this problem. I thought that would fix it, but it still wouldn't open when I reassembled it. Then another reviewer mentioned with this particular model that sometimes you have to lean the console forward and tip it downward while pressing eject. I did this, and at first it didn't work, so then I repeated it while tapping on the BACK of the console, and it opened! I grabbed the tray quickly, as it tried to go back in. Then it kept opening and closing by itself. I turned it off and back on again. Then it worked like a charm after that! No more sticking. So glad to have it working again. Thanks for your help!

Sticking tray door is common with this model. If the door doesn't want to open you need to replace that tiny black belt this opens and closes the door, they stretch as they get older, use a twizzers to remove and replace. It is called a square belt, the size is 1.9.If a tray opens and closes it means the tray door is NOT closing all the way,so you need to adjust the tray door.I mentioned how to do this under the 5045 model. Some people have removed the tray door all together. An alternative is replace the stock loader/ burner with a PC burner, these last longer and the dist tray door is gear opened, it uses no belt.

Liteon 5045 problem in playing normal movie DVD's

The DVD drives are very unreliable and just get more temperamental with age. I replaced mine with a Lite-On SOHW-1213S. The DVD is too big to fit in the old ones place so it sits on top of the unit with the cable going through the slot, but it works brilliantly.

Can't get reliable recording discs

There actually is a recommended list on Lite-on website but I have used bulk-paq, ridisk and phillips without problems until it stopped reading any alltogether. I recently cleaned it with a DVD cleaner disk and its working properly again. Also on the website is a download for updated firmware which may help in your case.
