Hmmm... could be build up of exaust pressure in the housing, released after so many piston strokes? Never heard of this. Your exaust is pushed out thru the shaft case.
look at the engine and if you have a cap to remove and put engine oil in then check with a dipstick then you have a 4stroke if you done then a 2stroke ! do you put 2stroke oil in the fuel , if yes then you got a 2stroke !!!!
It's a basic yamaha 2stroke eng. there's a drain plug on bottom. Replace with yamaha 2stroke gear oil 1.8 quarts check filter which is located new fuel door. Replace or clean with solvent( replace) never mix oil only one brand should be use at a time. Yahmalube or simial

it should have its own oil mixing tank that you need to check all the time if you cant find it then just mix two stoke. if its a 2stroke and it sounds like your timming is out that will make it back fire
