the nextel is on whats called an IDEN network and tmobile is on a GSM network two very different systems. you can get a unlock code for the nextel phone but you'll still run into problems using those two combinations.
the i830's were junk. It's probably dented inside. If you want to try and get it fixed, you will need to have this repaired at a local service center.

& Repair Program) and TEP (Total Equipment Protection), and can be
done at any Sprint Nextel Service & Repair Location. If you do not
subscribe to ESRP or TEP, the charge for the repair will be no more
than $55.
