no, i'm sorry the maximum amount of ram the motherboard will recognize is 512 mb, it's not an OS limit it's a MOBO limit

The maximum is 1 GB. Standard, it comes installed with 256 MB but you upgrade with additional 256 MB or 512 MB memory modules. The modules you are looking for are:

256 MB DDR (1 x 256 MB) SODIMM (PC2700) 2.5v SYNC
512 MB DDR (1 x 256 MB) SODIMM (PC2700) 2.5v SYNC

Here are the specifications of the Gateway 838GM: You will have to replace the existing memory with thesesettings only: The machine comes with: 512 MB = 256 MB (removable) + 256 MB PC3200DDR SDRAM DIMMs. Supports Dual Channel DDR Nowyou can only upgrade to 4.0 Gig total. looks like your machine has two memory modules

1. 256 mb ddr 1
2. 128 mb ddr 1

module of 2 gb in ddr1 are hard to find

but all you can do is take out these two modules and replace with 2 x 1 gb ddr 1 modules

Make sure you have the memory installed correctly. Those beep codes identify it as bad memory. Try the old RAM.

i would suggest that you get a 256 mb AGP Either ATI or Nvidia.. and install it..

the memory is dual channel, so you have to use matched memory for it to work 1gig in each slot if possible, check the 1 gigs and 512's to see if they run at the same bus speed, if they are not matched there is your problem try a gig and a 512 in slot 0 to see if it picks the memory up, also there is sometimes an option in the bios to dissable dual mode
