I have a dark screen on the display of my IBM 6787 Wheelwriter 30 series II.

When I turn it on, the display screen is dark and when I hit the return key, numbers show up on the display screen, but that's it. not sure what's wrong with it. I did change the batteries, but that didn't fix the problem.

On the l. side of the keyboard there are keys labeled store, play & delete. Press & hold store then type an address 01 thru 99 release store and type whatever you want. Upon completion press store again. To play it back press play and the address, to clear delete and address.

The power comes on. There's a humming noise but nothing works. The display is interuppted dark lines. It quit mid typing. What's wrong?

Need to get more information. Turn off the machine and wait 5 seconds and then turn it back on. Do any of the lights on the right side of the keyboard come on and or blink? Does the carriage move at all or does the display have anything showing or are there just dark lines? Does the machine beep and if so, how many times? The answers to these questions will help diagnose the problem(s).

It is possible that your carriage ahs a bind in it. When you turn on the machine does it go all the way to the left and then jump back to the margin? If you tab all the way to the right, does the carriage make a screeching sound when you hit the return? If this happens, your transport motor may need to be serviced as well as the carriage rails and bearings in the carrier.
