Disc won't spin. Disc doesn't show up in browser

My PS2(slim console) is not reading the disc. The disc doesn't even spin when I insert it. The PS2 doesn't even acknowledge the disc is there in the browser. How do I fix this problem?

EASY SOLUTION TO FIX OURS!! Ours had the same problem disc woudn't spin, showed up as no data in the browser. I searched tons of websites & couldn't find any answers, so I just started double checking things on the system & that's when I noticed this: I went to system configurations, then noticed that digital out (optical) was switched to "ON" I set it to off, put the game in & it loaded it right up. Too bad we just bought a ps3 40gb only to find out it won't play ps2 games so we traded in all our games. I was about to trade in the system for $18 too (all I could get since it was broke & they were going to charge a refurbishing fee), but decided against it since the system was less than a year old & I was going to contact sony 1st. Hope others' problem is as simple as this=)

  • yonsayvitch Oct 06, 2008

I've tried the suggestions on this post/board but none work. My son dropped the PS2 and from then it says "disc read error." I bought a DVD lens cleaner disc and it spun (you could hear it) but when it said it was done, the games still didn't "read." I took it apart and all the pieces seemed to be intact. It won't read. What do I do?

You got a problem with the lasers data getting back to the Motherboard.
One of these could be your problem

  1. Laser lens is melted. Look at the lens with a magnifying glass to see if it or its supporting frame is melted. REplace the laser in this case.
  2. The ribbon Cable going from the Laser to the motherboard is damaged or loose.
  3. Your laser is burned out. Press the two interlock to override the door being open, to see if the laser even lights up. 2 switches, one at rear left corner, one behind the On/reset switch.
  4. Your Laser is dirty and needs cleaning look at it with a magnifying Glass to make sure you got it clean. Use Q-tip and window glass cleaner, not alcohol.

When I put in a game it says reading disc. then it pops up saying disc couldn't be read. I seen the mother board moving and the disc is turning. I looked at the lens and it looks great. Do you have another suggestion?

I have a playstation 2 slim here. It wont spin the

Is that the only disc you seem to be having the problem with?? If so try getting the disc repair kit and using that. I had the same problem with mine but it was only some of the discs. The ps2 slim can be very sensitive and even the slightest defect in a disc will cause it not to recognize there is even a disc there.

PS2 Slim Disc Wont Spin

Sounds like the laser has gone out. The unit will not try to spin unless the laser can see the disc. A new laser can be picked up on ebay for less than $10

Please insert ps2 format disc?

Try inserting the disc in your computer. If it reads its fine. Then look if the Slus...... is compatible.maybe thats why it doesn't play. your ps2 must have an old bios system even if slim.

Disc read error

Disc Read Error generally means that the game disk cannot be read by your console.

Reasons for Disc Read Error
1. Disk surface scratched or smudged.
2. Disk surface dirty.
3. Lens surface dirty.

Here is what you can try doing.

1. Check the game disc for any scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try to clean them off by using a non-abrasive cotton cloth.

2. If the PS2 console is lying down, please set the console to on its side or if it's on its side set it to flat position, restart the console and then try game again. Always ensure the PlayStation 2 is in a cool, well ventilated place.

3. Remove and reinsert the Memory card of your PS2, restart the console then try running the game again.

Other troubleshooting that you can try.

Change the Disc speed of the PS2 DVD and then try again.

Start the PS2 with no disc in a drive. Press the "triangle" button on the controller.
Use the up and down buttons on the controller to select "Playstation Driver” and press the "triangle" button on the controller.
Select Disc speed. If it is set to "Fast," select "Standard"; if it is set to "Standard", select "Fast" and press the "X" button on the controller. Press the "O" button on the controller. Insert the game disc and restart the PS2. Try running the game again.

Turn the Diagnosis On for PlayStation2 to auto detect the best settings.

From the Browser and System Configuration menu. Press the triangle button to select Version. Highlight the Console from the list and press the triangle button - this accesses the next menu option. The Diagnosis will be highlighted. Press the X button to access the options available. Highlight "ON" and press the X button to affect the change. Restart the console and try the game again.

If the above steps does do not solve the error then you would probably have to replace the disc.

Note: If you are using the Slim version of PS2 make sure that the console is properly ventilated and that it should always be in the standing position, as the slim version of PS2 no fan or any other cooling unit unlike the normal PS2.
