you have not said the make or model.but try this.
Make sure the push your bobbin winder to the right then to the left and see if that solves the problem. Your Old Machine has a Clutch & It Needs to be Released. The Clutch is this little dial that is inside of the hand wheel. In older machines, it was used to wind the bobbin without the needle going up and down.17 Jul 2015

I would totally remove the bobbin apparatus & check that area

I love/hate my serger! Is thread stuck anywhere below? Bent needles? Are the needles in correctly and tightly? Is the machine greased? Unthread it, rethread. After all of this, it should work. Good luck. My simple old singer didn't do this but it wore out and the Viking is temperamental!

Try removing the whole clamp that holds the needle. The clamp is replaceable. What type of machine do you have?

it could be a part is damaged or broken or a timing problem,,it
would be a good idea to have the machine checked.

I would replace the needle anyway. It's hard to tell if one is bent or not.

Remove your feed dog/needle plate and the bobbin cover. Take out your bobbin and bobbin carrier.

Get out a magnifying glass and really examine. Look for thread ends in between moving parts.

Also check the thread pathways. Especially where the take up lever is hidden. I've heard of some ladies finding threads snarled up in that area which caused problems like this.

Good luck. If all else fails take it in for repair.

it sounds like the take up lever has either come loose or is broken, & since the needle won't go up & down it needs to be checked
