Question about Nikon Cameras
Memory cards can and do fail. Try formatting the card in a computer and then format it again in the camera. If this does not work, then the card has failed.

SOURCE: nikon D70 with brand new Sandik ultra11 2gb flash card error CHR
Go to the Nikon site and upgrade the firmware on your D70 to version 2.0.
Before doing that, try turning the camera off, wait a min, then back on. That sometimes clears the error. The D70 is having trouble reading the card(s) you're putting in. The upgrade fixes that.

once you insert the card you have to go into your menu and reformat the card. reformating will erase its contents so keep that in mind.

SOURCE: New 4GB CF card for E5400, camera gives 'out of memory' message
So far as I am aware, the 5400 will support only up to 2GB cards. As to the firmware upgrade you mention, I don't recall that that has any bearing on the max. card capacity; but it's worth doing for the RAW format support (for me, at least). Cheers and good shooting. Davo, Tas.
