Question about Vitamix Blenders

Open Question

When I turn the Vitamix Vita Prep 3 "On" with the switch set to "Variable speed" it starts on "High" when the variable speed control knob is set to 1. Which switch/part do I need to replace?

I cleaned the outside/crevices of "variable & high function" switch, but it still seems a little sticky when moving the switch up & down making me think that its stuck in the "High" position even when its set to "Variable" This blender comes from a high volume smoothie & juice bar. All the warranties have now expired on our blenders therefore we are trying to troubleshoot and fix the blenders ourselves. I'm new to working on blenders, but am confident I can replace switches and motors in blenders coming from an automotive background, Any help is greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: my vitamixer's variable speed switch is stuck on

This problem sounds like failure of the Variable Speed Potentiometer component. Here is the most helpful Fixya article so far: http://www.fixya.com/support/t6032529-need_replace_speed_control
I have the same problem right now and don't want to pay ridiculously high prices for a small electronic component.
So far, this is as far as I've gotten in researching replacement parts:Vitamix Part #015955
Partstown sells #15955 for $23.39 on their website but I found out they charge $15 for shipping -- for a one-ounce piece of electronics. I won't pay to be ripped off on shipping so I won't buy one from Partstown until I've exhausted less-expensive suppliers. Here is the product at Partstown: http://www.partstown.com/vita_mix/vm15955

Another Fixya contributor, Robert Sadler, said he was going to try a generic potentiometer from Mouser.com. His descriptions are kind of vague for me. I'm not an electronics expert so I'm not very confident I can interperet his description:

"If you are comfortable with soldering, you can get a replacement part at Mouser.com. The pot is a 5k "slimline" made by Bourns, however looking inside the cover it looks like most pots would fit. I ordered one for a bit over $5 and will update when I get it with how it worked. You would just have to solder the existing wires to it." -Robert Sadler

I have no problem soldering the existing wires onto a new component but I don't really know what would be an appropriate potentiometer to buy as a replacement from an electronics supplier. In addition, Mouser's website seems to sell potentiometers only in bulk quantities of 5, 6, 12, or 45 items at a time. I just want one.

If anyone knows how to interpret Robert Sadler's comments, or has actually done this repair, please post below. I'm sure quite a few people would benefit from a high-quality repair at a low component cost.

Blender appears to be stuck on high. Today we changed the variable speed button blender still appears to be stuck on high.

The speed control usually is by electronics. The speed control switch will merely be telling the circuitry what speed is required but if the circuitry is faulty nothing will happen.

When i turn it onto high speed it willl fuse istanlty. (Even with somthing easy to blend like a smoothie) .Any ideas what could be wrong?

I would suspect a motor fault, most likely an insulation problem in the armature or the fields. Contact Vitamix for your local authorised service agent. Unless it has been assembled incorrectly it should not be one of the internal wires as they are supposed to be secured and correctly routed during assembly.

On my Vitamix 5000 the variable speed control does not work

It will probably just need the pot replacing, take note of where the wires go. I see someone else here is doing the same job and wants to know where to put them back. Take a photo first saves a lot of grief. The pot is the rotary resistance switch behind the knob.

Can't unscrew drive socket on vitamix super 5000 to replace it. The 5/64 hex wrench does not fit in. And another problem is that variable speed does not function. It is possible only slow or high speed.

The hex wrench only fits in one position, there is a groove in the lip in the top housing and you need to turn the coupling until the hex screw head lines up. The groove is normally plugged with a dob of white silicone. The hex screw is not tightened fully tight on reassembly, the coupling needs a bit of slop. Speed control problem will likely involve replacing the control switch assembly.

Vitamix variable speed not smooth

Some models had a weakness with the variable resistance in the rotary switch but your description sounds more like the main PCB or even the motor both of which are very expensive parts to replace.

I have this model and a vita prep 3. Both turn off when tasked with heavy blending. Is there anyway to increase their blending torque capacity? They used to be much better. They are not old machines.

The motors even if they not old blenders if they have work with too much load for along time then they have been overheated and thus they will trip overheat safety more sensitive. So now actualy you have less blending torque as you have describe. So now their is much posibilty if you continue to work it the same way you will finally burn the motor rotor so the damage will be grait.
So now not only you can not get more torque but you should try to avoid very heavy use in order to have them work for a longer time.
When you use with a lot of ice cubes try to cover them with a lot of liquids and always use the pulse mode to start ant the continues rotation.
Good luck
