Hello, Christine -
Since you were able to take the "brown spots" off with water (a spray of water?) they may really have been aphids.
See the information here:
http://www.orchiddynasty.com/common-orchid-ailments/
You may wish to contact an orchid grower's group (they seem to tend to have "Society" in their names) in your area and ask for advice. I have no idea of the part of the world in which you live, so I cannot refer you to one. You can use your favorite search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc.) and use the following search phrase:
orchid society
Note: Fixya.com receives questions from people from all over the world. I am answering from the USA.
Best wishes.
SOURCE: Brown spots coming from steam iron
Fill with 50/50 water vinegar solution. Get it good and hot and let it sit for two hours. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Buy a gallon of water from the market and use that from now on. This will fix your problem. The Iron is concentrating the iron in you water and this is what is causing the brown spots. Hope you find this helpful. If you do please take the time to rate it fixya and maybe I will keep helping people for free.

SOURCE: Dryer leaves brown spots on clothing articles.
With the combination of seal gaps and brown spots (streaks) on your clothes, chances are the front (part # 3406129 ~ $26) and rear (part # 279857 ~ $17) drum seals need to be replaced. Run a rag around the seals and check the marks to confirm this is the problem.
Depending how big the gap is, you may need to replace the drum support rollers if they are worn (part # 349241T ~ $24).
The parts are available at Sears. Labor costs will vary depending on where you live and if you're not replacing them yourself.
Let me know if you need more help or information.
Good luck!
SOURCE: leaving brown stains on clothes, messing them up,
If it isn't rust, I suspect cotton can decompose if moist for a long time (in the laundry or machine), causing brown spots. In that case, the spots probably cannot be removed. Or can they?

You can manually program your machine to deal with varying water types believe it or not
good luck
Where do you live? Fungal disease followed by stress can cause this. Have you had a lot of rain lately?
