Onan 5.5 generator cranking over very slow and finally the starter makes a grinding sound.

Finally the starter makes a grinding sound. At drivers seat, hit a emer. AUX start switch while holding the gen. switch and it cranks over perfectly. What should I try next?

SOURCE: starter cranks and cranks but

This sounds like the fuel pump pressure check valve is defective, that is the usual cause of this long crank time issue, I am sure if you replace the fuel pump and filter the problem will go away. If you want to verify this issue have a shop run a fuel pressure leak down test, after the key is turned off the fuel press should not drop more than 5 PSI

SOURCE: Hard to start warm engine

Sounds like you have a problem with your fuel injectors, either they are working to much or not enough once they get warm....

Take it to a shop ant tell them you want the injectors tested.

Onan genarator will not crank

If it wont crank, check to see if the solenoid on the starter pulls in, the starter and solenoid are one unit, it sounds like an internal starter contact, if you have 12V going to it. Assuming the battery is good. When you press and hold the stop button does the fuel pump pump prime? if so control board has power

No cold start

Well first of if it cranks slow, make sure the correct battery voltage is being applied. IS the pre-heat function working? If that is not it won't start when cold. Also check oil viscosity is correct. If the pre-heat is working make sure glow plugs are getting warm on each cylinder.

Onan propane generator starting problem

There can be numerous reasons why and is difficult to diagnose without more information. Assuming plugs filter etc are fine and new or clean and gapped. One thing I would check would be the LP pressure going into the unit, Then check the demand regualtor. You did not mention if it keeps running when it finally starts. Over time the demand regulator can accumulate a heavy wax preventing the diaphragm from opening. This wax is the result of a lubricate LP gas companies have in the gas. It can make starting harder, then result in it not starting at all. Regulators typically should be replaced and not serviced due to the high possibility of gas leaks. Hope this helps www.advanced-power-technologies.com

Could it be the starter or a relay making grinding and whining noise

Grinding noises can be generated by several things, a bad bendix (the drive component on the business end of a starter), a solenoid not fully engaging a bendix, a weak battery and finally a damaged ring gear or flex plate. Without specific info on the vehicle, these are the choices that come to mind.

My onan 6500 gen cranks slow and won't start new batterys and clean cables 12.5 v on one side of soleniod and 7.5 v on other

Your solenoid might be bad or your starter motor might need new carbon brushes. If you can take out the starter motor and see if you can manually rotate it, if it is not to hard to turn it, if hard to turn manually your starter might have something bad inside. A bad bearing or bushing. One more thing try this while cranking try to tap the starter motor.

Onan 4kw Emerald I generator will not crank

The gen. is not the problem, the engine start circuit is not functioning. You need to look at the starter solenoid and starter.
