Question about Bernina Sewing Machines
How long since you've had the machine cleaned and lubed? Sounds like perhaps the selector mechanism has seized. I know this is a common issue with the older Bernina (Records) that require frequent cleanings and oiling (with good quality sewing machine oil or Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube).

there will be a adjustment in that you should select the stiching
mode and in that give the straight mode the problem will be solved

SOURCE: Zig Zag Stitch not working
THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.

Sounds like you need to adjust the tension. Probably a good idea to oil this older machine before you adjust. Also look for and clean out any lint or debris in bobbin case and around foot area.

- yes \-every 3-5 hours of sewing or more if you are sewing very dirty fabrics (used canvas etc)
-remove the shuttle, clean and oil the "race" where the shuttle ocellates
-remove the light cover with the off set torues wrench included with your machine
oil the needle bar, take up lefver joints and the presserfoot bar. any thing more should be done by a qualified technicial who should remove back and front covers and remove lint and dirt and then oil all the bearings
