SOURCE: machine will not complete a buttonhole, keeps showing error code 6L. No error code listed in manual. Machine will only do first half of buttonhole and then shows code and stops.

I've been looking too and I found here http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/sewingclasses/board.pl?t=18328that you need to put the bar behind the needle threader down. I think they call it a button hole stop? I don't know, but it worked. I didn't even know it existed. But it solved my problem. On my Kenmore it looks like a black lever and you pull it down. It tells the button-holer that you are at the end of the hole and it needs to backup. nifty, kind of.

I have a brother XL -2600i, it will not sew forward only reverse, what can I do to fix this problem?

Did you just make a buttonhole? I have had several people bring a machine to me with that problem. The machine was still set on Step 3 of the machine buttonhole. Hopefully this is it because it is the simplest thing to fix!

The other thing you might want to check is how long it has been since the machine was oiled. Follow the directions in your book to identify oiling spots. If you don't have a book, lay the machine on its back, take the bottom off and oil all the places where any two parts move against each other. One exception; don't get oil on the belt that goes up to the hand wheel or it will slow your machine down until it wears off.

If neither works, and especially if it is a computerized machine, you will need to see a repairman.

Lengthening stitches.

You can adjust the length of the Zigzag (Satin)
Stitch using the buttonhole fine-adjusting screw. You will find it right above your stitch selection dial.

> For a longer stitch length, turn the
buttonhole fine-adjusting screw with a large
screwdriver in the + direction.
> For a shorter stitch length, turn the
buttonhole fine-adjusting screw with a large
screwdriver in the - direction.

Hope this helps

Buttonholes

First be sure to follow the steps described in the manual for attaching the buttonholer.

Second, check that the buttonhole lever is pushed because it returns to it's unpushed state after a buttonhole is completed and therefore it will stitch in the same spot.

Also, try adjusting the stitch length. I've found that I can't make buttonholes while on the satin stich setting ( that little rectangle) but if I move it just a bit towards 1 it will manage to make the right stitches.
