He should join a local paddling club tio find other parents and kids, and he should take lessons--whether at the club (cheap) or elsewhere (less cheap but might save a life and will make every outing much more fun). With a canoe, you do not need the double loops designed to go around both ends of a kayak. Instead, you can run a cable through at least two of the seats and thwarts and then around the tree or whatever. Do remember that a determined thief can steal almost anything, but if you have a solid tree and loop through several points on the boat you should be OK.
