SOURCE: My mother's Kenmore HW305 humidifier

Yes it is doing what it is supposed to do, just remember to clean it regularly, it is both a fine mist and steam, I would recommend having an fan source close to it to keep the humidification moving in the home, hope that helps.

SOURCE: Kenmore HW305 Humidifier putting out hot steam...Is that normal?

this is a steam and misting type humidifier, the water tanks will not heat up, the heating element is internal to the unit, just make sure you clean it periodically and I would suggest having a fan asst to help move the humidification around the room, hope that helps

SOURCE: leftover water in the base was hot in the morning

If there is not much leftover water, you don't have to worry much about it. However, if the leftover water is
somewhat flooding the area where it was located, it is a
different story, there is a leak and it must be corrected.
Check for leaks in the water container, so that operates
normally. Hope this will help you.

SOURCE: cleaning internal humidifier

Try using vinegar and distilled water.
If this does not work try using a little bleach and water. Repeat till mildew is gone.
Rinse thoroughly Again & Again.
Everyday humidifiers should be cleaned.
After your last uses try blow drying it. Before you put it away. If it's dry it will not mold or mildew.
Mold & mildew will cause you to get very sick.
If the mildew does not go away replace your unit.
