98 Linc Cont screeches when starting. Replaced the starter and it continued. Replaced again with new Bosch starter. Was told flywheel has five teeth in a row that are only 1/3 gone. Next guess was to replace flywheel. Strickland suggested engine crack thrusts could be worn or crank moved back enough to not engage. Or flex plate on the back of the torque converter damaged and broke it the center where connects to crank. To measure distance from housing to ring gear and check it out with nose cone on starter.? Do u think it is the flywheel or stricklands suggestions on similar case where flywheel looked better. I'd tag him, but new here n don't see that option.
Flywheel teeth get damaged in 3 places for 6 cyl or 4 for v8 If the teeth are damaged then the fix is a replacement ring gear
now if the car is automatic it will not have a flywheel as the torque convertor does that job
there is a flex plate bolted instead to the crank shaft and inturn bolted to the torque converter
They are kown to develope faults and crack off at the crank shaft so that they become warped ( not allowing full pinion engagement) or dreak off altogether and not turn the crank at all
The thrust bearings on the crank generally do not fail as they run in oil all the time so disregard that suggestion( if the thrust bearing was to fall ot completely , the added movement is 1/8 " and the pinion would still engage a good ring gear)
Now the teeth have to be replaced so for an automatic it is a new flex plate ( box out )
for a manual it is flywheel off and a new ring gear fitted to the flywheel ( box out )
check the pitch of the teeth of the new starter
the movement of the pinion can be checked by an accredited auto electrician and adjusted by the encentric pivot pin in the solenoid fork
So what ever happens the box has to come out for the repair
SOURCE: starter runs but won't engage flywheel
engine crank thrusts worn and crank moved back enough to not engage ,with a manual the clutch would push it forewards.or the flex plate on the back of the torque converter damaged and broke in teh centre where bolts to the crank
SOURCE: Starter wont engage ring gear.
eathier it needs shims or you have a bad flywheel sounds like its free spinning at times pull the starter an turn the ring gear make sure its not missing teeth if not you may need shims
SOURCE: starter runs but won't engage flywheel
Hello, I would make sure that your car is not one of those half year cars becuase two differn't starters may be offered for the same year of car. Also, I would check and see if your battery has enough CCA's to power your system. The only other thing is to turn your crankshaft with a breaker bar to turn your flywheel to possibly get a fresh area of teeth on it. If none of this fails it's as simple as just replacing the flywheel. If you did a bench test on the starter and the bendix engaged that is good. Buying parts from an Auto parts store does not gurantee the part is good and that the bendix engages the full distance to turn the flywheel. I would try to find a mechanic who rebuilds starters to make sure that the bendix is engaging fully. I hope this helps you!
SOURCE: Car won't start. Starter (new) engages but seems
Bad starter solenoid and possible bad return spring.
SOURCE: starter engagement
Yes it is. As for the starter issue the company/supplier of the crank and flywheel should be able to direct you to the proper starter to make up for that difference otherwise you will either keep having this issue or go back to the stock setup
