They are for the charger to know the voltage in the battery to turn on or off charging. some just need 3 connections and the 4th is just a dead connection. or can be for location only so you don't put the wrong battery in. as they do other voltage batteries that look the same fitting.

SOURCE: 18 volt ryobi battery & yellow lights come on wha

talked to Ryobi and they are vague. It can either mean that the battery is bad, or the charger is bad and another one that maybe the contacts of the battery are dirty or not seating fully in charger. What I would look for in this instance first unplug the charger and look into charging slot to make sure the terminals of the charger are not bent and they come out into the cavity where battery would go. If not gently pull terminal into opening and retry. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance

SOURCE: Schumacker battery charger problem?

You are charging. The meter corresponds to the level of charge in the battery. Try setting to 10 A for 4 hours, battery should be half-way up. To determine if battery id dead.. leave battery off charger once it is fully charged...test with a voltmeter after 10 min.....battery should still be above 12v...after1 hour it should still be above 12v...if not battery is spent.

I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

SOURCE: 14.4V Drill Battery Will not Charge

The battery is 14.4 volts so the charger should be 14.4 volts.

Show proper battery hookup for 24 volt trolling motor, 2' 12 volt batteries

to get b24 volts from 2 x 12 volt batteries
connect the negative (- ) terminal of one battery to the ground point on the motor
next connect the positive terminal (+ ) of that same battery to the negative terminal of the next battery
connect the positive terminal of the last battery to the power terminal of the motor
so it will be negative to ground , positive to negative , positive to motor or motor control
(-) to ground (+ ) to (-) , (+) to motor
That is called a series connection and increases the voltage available

Positive and negative points

Use a multimeter to test the contacts, the red probe on the multimeter is positive. When you place the red and black probes on the battery contacts and the meter reading is negative then the red probe is on the negative contact, if the reading is positive then the red probe is on the battery's positive terminal.

How do i identify the negitive and positive terminals on my 18 volt batteries.

About the only way to do that is with a multimeter, preferably digital. Touch the probes onto the contacts and if the red probe is on the positive terminal, the reading will be a straight reading, eg. 18.6v. If the black probe is on the positive your reading will be a minus (negative) reading. eg, -18.6v. If you are using an analogue meter, you have to be quick or you will damage the instrument. If the red probe is on the positive terminal you will get a reading. If the black probe is on the positive reading the needle will go of scale below the zero point. Use a high voltage setting to minimise the input to the meter.

18 volt batteries

Yes you can, as long as the batteries are the same style and fit the older Ryobi tools. The Ah rating is a capacity rating. The higher the Ah, the longer the battery will last so the 1.7Ah will just last a bit longer than the 1.5Ah batteries, but yes you can use them on older 18v Ryobi tools. I do it all the time.

Can a bad ryobi 18 drill ruin a new 18volt ryobi battery

If the drill has a short in it, then yes, it could short the battery out. Probably in the trigger switch.

18 volt ryobi batteries wont hold charge

NiCads stop taking a charge because microscopic crystals build between the individual battery cells (inside the pack) and the leads between them. here is what i have done for my craftsmen NiCad 18 volt batteries to get them to once again hold a charge:

you'll need ~2 to 3 times the voltage that you are using. for instance, if you've got a 14v drill battery that has stopped working, then you'll need 28-42 volts, 18v will need 36-54 volts. i have found 3 car (or motorcycle or lawn tractor) batteries work fine. so i have 2 motorcycle batteries and 1 tractor battery.

i hook these car/motorcycle/tractor batteries up in series. positive from one batt to the negative of the next and so on until i have one positive lead not connected and one negative lead not connected.

something like this: --(batt)+_--(batt)+_--(batt)+

then with safety glasses on i touch the positive lead from the motorcycle battery to the positive tab of the NiCad drill battery with one hand and the negative lead of the tractor battery to the negative tab of the NiCad drill battery (at the same time) and count to 3. i remove and wait a few seconds (5-7) and repeat 2 more times.

once the last ZAP is done, place the NiCad drill battery into the charger and see if the charge light illuminates. if it does, then you have just saved a battery from the land fill and some $$ from your pocket. if it doesn't, then try to repeat it once more, but no more after that.

some word of caution. do not let the the + & - leads of the car/motorcycle/tractor batteries touch each other. that's 36 volts you've got there and will spark/explode.

also, if during the zapping of the dead NiCad battery you hear a "pop", one NiCad cell inside the battery pack has given up the ghost and now the battery is trash for sure. take it to radio shack for recycling. do NOT attempt to zap it again.

use at least 14-16 guage wire (or larger which is a smaller number) to connect the batteries in series and also to zap the NiCad drill batteries.

one final note: do NOT use this method on Lithium Ion batteries. it will not work and may cause injury!!!

good luck.
