Question about Hoover Washing Machines
Was the burning a burned rubber smell? Maybe its your belt. either off track or worn down and motor is spinning but the belt is not turning. Just something to check.

SOURCE: smoke coming from back of
You may have overloaded the washer and the belt drive system could not handle that excess mass.. The smoke and burning smell is a belt melting while trying to rotate the drum.. I would unload it .. gain access to the drive mechanism ( probably via an access panel in the back but may not be.. - brand and model specific).. and then check for damage to the drive belt.. You may look at the pulley system and look for burnt black from melted belt on it.. You could also have a clog in your pump that the belt drives but can't ( because of that clog) and therefore the belt rubs over the pump pulley and melts.. Could be any one of those things.. Hope that helps..

SOURCE: BURNING SMELL COMING FROM MY WASHING MACHINE
if it smells like rubber burning then i would suspect a belt is worn or slipping or somthing has jambed the basket from turning .. the belt is not expensive ..labor of course would be extra .. if the burning smells like insulation or a strong electrical burning smell then you may have a bad motor .. those used to be about $70 + labor .. no telling what they get for them now ...
you mention that the smell came from inside ... do you mean inside where the cloths are (the tub) or inside the cabinet (outside of where the cloths are) ...if the smell was coming from inside the washing tub .. then i would suspect something cought between the inner and outer tubs .. if the smell is not from there then the first suggestions above are good ... bras and slippers and such are good for getting cought .. check where the movable tub (with holes) meets the outer tube (no holes) .thats at the very top of the tub .. ..make sure nothing it cought there ...

SOURCE: Terrible smell coming from our washing machine
remove bottom cover at back of machine, loosen large jubilee clip on hose between drum and pump. pull hose down and off, take out strainer basket and pull top off, clean top, ball and basket by running under tap. clean out hose with an old rag. reassemble strainer and put back into hose, in the correct position. fix hose back on to drum and tighten clip. run machine on a hot wash and all should be fine.
