00' Toyota Camry -- Radio Issues

My Camry is a previously owned vehicle, known to have been in at least one accident (rear right bumper). The radio has never worked correctly since I started driving the car four years ago.

Most of the time the CD player skips the disks I try to play. It is apparent that it is a problem with the stereo given that the skips coincide with bumps in the road. Sometimes it is only with the large bumps, but others it will be with every small object, making it nearly impossible to listen to. Every now and then a CD will play fine but usually it skips, giving me the impression of a loose or damaged wire.

Also, the radio will act up otherwise every now and then as well. Most of the time it is the volume button -- it will turn the volume up when i turn it down and vice versa. Also, one time none of the buttons would respond, even the power button. I had to restart my car for it to go back to normal. Oh yes, and the tape player has never worked. All this sounds electrical to me, but since I have not tampered with car wiring before I would like some opinions, please!

So, does this sound like I should check the wiring, replace the stereo, or replace everything? If I should check the wiring, please let me know if this is something a typical amateur could do themselves or if it requires certified mechanics. Any links for instructions would be appreciated. THANKS!!

2001 toyota camry rear speakers don't work

It is possible the radio has failed, either speaker power or fader circuit. Substitute for one of them a known good speaker, and see if it works or not. You can buy one cheaply from Parts Express or similar if you cannot find one in the garage. That will tell you if both speakers have failed (very unlikely) or it is the radio.

I a '83 camry, there are 2 seperate plugs that go into a factory radio.
One for Power/and front speakers, and the other for rear speakers.

Sounds as if you are missing part of the harness for the rear speakers (or it is shoved in the back of the dash unused by the previous install). If there is not an un-cut plug in the dash - your only course of action would be to run your own set of speaker wire to the rear.

See this picture... these are the plugs that should go into your factory radio....

Metra kit 71-1938 will go from your factory wiring directly into your factory radio.

Toyota radio code

Johnny5486:

Emissionwiz is correct, but, his information is for older Model Camrys.

The 2003 "factory-installed" radios in the Camry product line does not have an anti-theft feature, and, because of having no anti-theft feature, there is no reactivation code. If you have a dead battery, the only thing you will lose regarding the radio functions would be the radio stations that you programmed into the memory. The radio will function properly after a dead battery is replaced with no issues.
