Usually if I suspect the crank sensor, I just replace it. It should be located by the harmonic balancer, on the end of crankshaft. As you can see three wire connector, ref voltage--ground--signal. The green wire is ref voltage, 12 volts. The purple wire should be ground. The yellow wire is signal, the signal should switch, dc pulse.
Two main types of sensor - Hall effect or inductive. A good idea of whether the inductive type is bad can be formed using an ohmmeter. The Hall effect type is more complex.
By far the best method of checking is to use an oscilloscope though some diagnostic software can provide the verification of a signal even at cranking speed.

these 4x4 units are controlled by a module in passenger kick panel. water leaks onto module and after time is corrodes the connectors and the unit. check for this and repair where needed

it is located at the back of the engine on top of the transmission bell housing, the plug runs over to the passenger side of the engine bay and it comes out from behind the engine, you can actually get your hand on the sensor itself from under the hood on the drivers side, and i believe its a 13mm bolt holding it in,the new sensor will have a sticker on the end of it...leave it there,it is used for correct spacing between the sensor and the flywheel, hope this helps
Testimonial: "Everything was just like you said but as a not atleast for my jeep it is an 11mm not 13mm. Works great so far (keep fingers crossed) "

. Its above the starter going into the side of the block. (front side of the engine) Disconnect the battery. Remove the starter. Remove the wIre CONNECTOR plug to the sensor. The sensor has 1 bolt holding it in. Remove the bolt, you may have to wiggle the sensor at the base a bit as you pull it out. Replace, and make sure it is pushed in all of the way. Replace the bolt, wire plug, starter, reconnect the battery.

have you found out how to fix this problem? mine is doing the same thing now. we replaced the crankshaft sensor but now it is saying i have a misfire

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. Check your timing belt/chain first. Check all of your fuses also, just in case. The camshaft is a possible cause to your issue. The signal may not be getting back to the computer. In order to find the issue, you will need to get a voltage meter to test the parts of the ignition system. Make sure the spark is a good spark, as well as the fuel pressure.
